Love's Labor Lost

I once could call you mine and loved you

But you went into the endlessness of the night

As though seeking refuge from a storm.

I miss you with each beat of my sad heart.

*

Come back to me, I pray.

With words of love renewed and hope profound,

Tell me that you are mine once again.

I promise to be loving with each turn of the earth.

*

Or if you cannot return,

Please show me that you’ve found joy

In each and everything passing thing you do,

And I’ll no longer be filled with enduring regret.

*

I love you more than all I know,

More than my own residing happiness.

I’ll find peace and more in your success

Of all you seek in love’s eternal and abiding flame.

*

For I love you more than life itself

Despite your absence from my life

Your joy will be my life's survival,

My motivation, and encompass all I seek.

*

Our lives were star-crossed and forever doomed

Yet I would give it all for another mere glimpse

Of all that I once shared each day with you,

For the everlasting worth far exceeds the loss.
