Return of the Green Comet

after a 50,000 year wait.

Over fifty thousand years ago

you glided through our space.

When Neanderthals and Humans,

survived the polar Age.

*

Ancient of days, you’ve traveled

and bore witness from afar,

to a galaxy of marvels

from the Oort Clouds to the stars.

*

Your radiant emerald hues

streak nobly across the sky.

Sun's gravitations yank and pull,

You must fly away or die.

*

What mysteries will you tell us?

What changes do you see?

Has the earth progressed or failed?

Will we survive? Tell us, please.

*

Green Comet, keep on flying high,

as you pass through Ursa’s gate.

With invitation to return,

Millennia, we will wait.

*

On your return, if we are gone

eradicated to extinction.

Spread tears through all the galaxies.

Our ruin of earth's perfection.

*********************

The Green Comet is here after a 50,000-year wait for its return. Neanderthals and New humans walked the earth and could see this comet, most likely born in the Oort Clouds, as it streaked across the sky during the Ice Age. The Green Comet is an emerald coma with a yellowish dust tail and an ion tail. It is an Isotropic comet, also called a Long period comet. The naked eye can see the emerald green galactic traveler in most parts of the northern hemisphere starting tonight, January 25th, 2023. Find the Big and Little Dipper (Ursa Major and Minor) as the comet's path appears to split the middle between them as if it's rising. The ideal viewing will take place on February 1st, 2023.

The southern hemisphere will be able to view the Green comet in late March or early April. The one caveat is it must survive its passing nearest the Sun this week and maintain its integrity. The comet could be decimated. There is a possibility that gravity pulling on it from Jupiter will aid its final escape from our solar system, and it may never return. This is a rare and uncommon event as we experience a sight not seen for fifty millennia.

There is a multitude of free online sites you can track in real-time and watch live streams of the Green Comet. I hope you look up, ponder, and enjoy it.

Lovely sentiments. Has anyone ever written a poem for the two Voyager and two Pioneer spacecraft out in the Oort cloud I wonder?

Fascinating! I will look for it! The big & little dipper show up right over my neighbour's tree so it should be easy to find---if clouds don't obscure the sky! Wonderful truths in your verses--we're just a blip in the vastness and wonder of the universe.

  • Great take on the challenge

  • Excellent

Really nice poem. Interesting to ponder, the comet is still a comet but civilization has evolved. ❤️
