Oh for the Softness of Silence

A free-verse poem

oh for the softness of silence

for the chance to pause, unseen

a brief reprieve from the world’s violence

to slip into the gaps in between

***

to sit in the dark of night

in sofa cushions nestled

wrapped in gentle candlelight

ease the hurts from all we’ve wrestled

***

oh for the softness of silence

for the chance to pause, unseen

a brief reprieve from the world’s violence

to slip into the gaps in between

***

the clunk of your key

as it turns my lock

and fits so perfectly

me, your solace, and you, my rock

***

oh for the softness of silence

for the chance to pause, unseen

a brief reprieve from the world’s violence

to slip into the gaps in between

***

the pressure-release valve

of each sharing our day

soul’s joyous salve

to caress our cares away

***

oh for the softness of silence

for the chance to pause, unseen

a brief reprieve from the world’s violence

to slip into the gaps in between

***

the way we communicate with a look

comfort with a touch

read one another like an open book

such bliss doesn’t take much

***

oh for the softness of silence

for the chance to pause, unseen

a brief reprieve from the world’s violence

to slip into the gaps in between

***

to feel the rhythm of your heartbeat

the heat of your skin

when our bodies meet

be it date night or a quiet eve in

***

oh for the softness of silence

for the chance to pause, unseen

a brief reprieve from the world’s violence

to slip into the gaps in between

***

to snuggle beneath the quilt

cuddle, huddle, relax, and unwind

safe in the fortress we’ve built

outside is out of sight, out of mind

***

oh for the softness of silence

for the chance to pause, unseen

a brief reprieve from the world’s violence

to slip into the gaps in between

***

our guilty pleasure, once a week

curtains drawn while we have a cave day

and claim the peace we seek

oh, Sunday!—the world and its ills kept at bay

***

oh for the softness of silence

for the chance to pause, unseen

a brief reprieve from the world’s violence

to slip into the gaps in between

***

companionship and shared pain

to know we are seen and heard

each other’s sunshine after the rain

to love and be loved without need of a single word

***

oh for the softness of silence

for the chance to pause, unseen

a brief reprieve from the world’s violence

to slip into the gaps in between
