Under the Full Moon
The mirror showed a reflection that wasn’t my own. No, that’s not entirely true. It only showed what the world saw but not what lurked inside. It emerged when the full moon rose high in the sky. That smiling, beautiful face hid the hungry being that lingered just under the surface. The well-put-together woman was a mask. Plastic surgery had made a plain girl into a goddess. A bite last summer made the goddess a powerful creature.

WHEN THE WALLS TALK
If walls could talk is such a cliche human saying. No one talks to a wall and expects it to answer. Where I exist, walls are dead trees. Although some walls can telepathically communicate with certain sensitive people, it would only confuse or scare them. But, sometimes, that can’t be helped. Though I can’t speak for what goes on outside this log cabin, here in this forest, we are very aware. We may have been cut from our source, mother earth, but her gift stays with us, even in this sterile place called home.

A DAY AT THE LAKE
The hazy sunbeams vanished under Lake Vera’s icy surface while a bald eagle dove and captured a rainbow trout. The bird and its victim soared to a padded nest up on the top of the cedar. Cathy snapped shot after shot on the camera she’d saved all year to buy. The heavy new lens gave her a close-up of the steely determination in the eagle’s eye and the blood seeping from the squirming fish. The eaglets would eat well tonight.

That Moment
I had a borrowed Beatle’s Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album, a curfew, and a six-mile walk ahead of me. Two sweaty hours later, I trudged up the gray cement steps that led to the freshly painted white front door and new deadbolt. I pulled out my house key and entered an empty house where cigarette smoke lingered underneath my mother’s floral perfume and bleach. As I shut and locked the door behind me, I could almost empathize with the inmate making the final walk on death row.
