Ode to Rare:
narrative poem
She’s a micro preemie,
in a macroeconomic world
rare as she can be, rarest of the rare she swears
With locks of natural red hair, the (MC1R gene comes through)
With eyes that change shades
with the color she wears
Primarily gray shone (no melanin in irises like hers)
A mother with eyes of green (her irises themselves contain no actual pigment)
Redhead too (MC1R gene comes through)
A father with eyes of blue (He lacks pigment to make irises brown)
Redhead too (MC1R gene comes through)
A sister with eyes of brown ( a higher amount of melanin is in irises like hers)
Redhead too (MC1R gene comes through)
A daughter with eyes of brown (the highest amount of melanin is in irises like hers)
Redhead too (MC1R gene comes through)
Her height doesn’t measure up.
to the length of her kindness
Standing proudly at 4’9.
She isn’t discounted in recognizability.
More likely,
to get a discount for shopping in the kids’ section
for jeans, she doesn’t have to fold up, or hem.
Oh, but then, throw in
her left-hand dominance
And that’s got her feeling like Babe Ruth
She’s a micro preemie,
in a macroeconomic world
rare as she can be, rarest of the rare she swears
