Not Here Nor There

The day broke

And so did she

What once held promise

Now proves impossible

With tired hands and tired eyes

She moves while standing still

She questions what is real

She gathers her belongings

Oblivious to the bits of herself escaping to fill their voids

The walls entombed her sound

As she sang with unbridled abandon

She embarked on one last journey through her sanctuary

Echoes of her life there sounding back to her with each groan of the hardwood as she stepped

When he was not there, it was hers

All hers

She did not have to tiptoe

She did not have to surrender

She got to be comfortable

When it was hers, it was hers

She cared for it

Adored it

She cherished the safety it provided

She did not have to be the perfect daughter, sister, or friend

She just got to be

She got to be the version of herself she felt she was

She had been locked away for so long

But within those walls

She was free

But it would not be forever

And so she had to seal herself away again

She pushes on but is now incomplete

Something is missing

Embedded within all its parts

Was now her heart

And she can never get it back

I really hope the girl in this poem is able to be herself permanently. No one should be forced to be someone they're not. Sadly, due to circumstances or other various reasons, this happens to far more people, far more often than humanity as a whole would like to admit. Thank you for sharing this poem. I look forward to more.

  • So much loss in this poem! The heart can be a home, when home is gone. :)
