We had a dog but not always.
We had a tree but not always.
We listened to Kenny G but not always.

We sang together but not always.
We read together but not always.
We ate together but not always.

We ran together but not always.
We laughed together but not always.
We lived together but not always.

We had heat but, not always.
We had food but, not always.
We had clothes but, not always.

When two become one,
the heritage of home resides in both.
Comfort, company and companionship.
--
Filtered needs, interests and intents.
In all of this we were together but, not always.
But, when we were, it felt like home.
Author's Note:
It's September; cue my annual introspection period. I've been thinking about the feeling of home and its meaningful transference from a passive to an active pursuit from childhood to adulthood. I had or did all of the things listed above but didn't always. They were more the fruit of home than home itself--home was being together.
