There was one,
Just one fight,
I remember, and remember.
When the dawning sun
Shouted, "Good morning!!!"
But my mother
Shouted louder.
And I was in mourning,
Hiding in music,
Cradling myself,
Drowning, drowning, drowning.
There was a plate,
Then a,
"Rachel! Rachel! Rachel!"
I crept with fear
To see a shameful man
Standing with no eyes,
And my mothers were wet,
Vengeful and hot
Like September.
I was scared,
So scared,
With trembling bones
When I heard her say,
"Ask your father
Where he's been
All night"
What trembled more?
My bones or words?
He could not,
He would not,
Look me in my eye,
Because he had none,
As he said,
"Partying with women"
Another plate,
Met its fate.
And so did my child-sized heart.
