Home away from home.

One Immigrant’s struggle

By SoGrayPublished 3 years ago Updated 3 years ago 2 min read

The arrival

Home away from home… Is there such a thing?

One airport searching for things I didn’t bring

Guilty until proven innocent

Little kindness, a lot of judgment

The cold is everywhere, in people’s hearts

It was hard to leave but even harder to start

All alone, far and afraid to be afraid

Secretly questioning the choices I’ve made

Home away from home… Is there such a thing?

Can you find elsewhere that happy feeling under your skin?

Conversations, small talk,

Can anyone recognize I am lost?

Many thoughts, many feelings

Struggling to find real meaning

Was it worth it? Was it true?

If so, why am I feeling blue?

Culture Shock

Home away from home… Is there such a thing?

You can’t call it home if it doesn’t feel like it

Does the coffee taste the same? Do I want to change my name?

Why is it so hard to make real friends?

So many boundaries, so many “cant’s”

Is it wrong to be yourself, even if you want?

Is it the color of my skin, my accent or how I look?

Is it because I am loud and don’t go by the book?

Home away from home… Is there such a thing?

Will my spirit light up with the spring?

But I am not alone, there are others like me

Rejected travellers fighting strong winds

We left our countries, we left our homes

In search of a better future, others for love

Different language, different faces

Labeled as “loud” in certain places

For them we are just outsiders

At home we are traitors, irrational striders

Settling

Home away from home... Is there such a thing?

Home is that happiness that makes you sing

It’s realizing a different language doesn’t only mean

To scrabble words to describe your sorrow

Or working double to write the struggle

But an opportunity… an open door

To bring down our barriers and grow

Home away from home… It is a real thing

It’s a suitcase packed with memories and a pillow full of dreams

Home is pen and paper, those pictures you keep

Of the people you love or the places you’ve been

Is opening mind, heart, breathing it all in

Adjusting doesn’t mean losing yourself in

It’s finding love in strangers, from all over the world

Sharing that bond that’s greater than words

Rising

Home away from home… It is a real thing

It’s embracing the change to open our wings

Its painting our future on an empty canvas

Sometimes ignoring those who don’t understand us

Every stroke is a choice we make, a step we take

Even if at first everything seems a little gray

Time brings more color to enhance our portrait

It’s believing something better awaits

Home away from home… It is a real thing

It’s sharing our culture, the strength we bring

It’s putting behind those tears…

Dropped the first few years…

It’s rising like a phoenix day after day

Sculpting our future, making our way

It’s learning to love a foreign land

To later realize… citizens of Earth, we all are.
