Euridice

Vacantly, eyes stare into the frozen earth

The hollow tunnel surrounds even the smallest whisper

Stifling the cries to forever silence.

A voice calls from behind, receding as the void opens before.

I recognize the voice yet cannot for the life of me

Remember to whom it belongs

So far away

So near

My heart aches

Longing for a memory just out of reach.

To whom should it belong?

Out of the pallid smell of death,

Some sweet perfumes creep into the senses,

Driving the body forward and down

Down

Down

Down to the depths of this hole unto which there is no return

A flash of images corrode from the mind

Slipping as silt into the sea

There is no cold

There is no warm

Only silence

Only stillness

Out of the shadows slither the guides

To lead you onward towards your eternity

Melancholy and helpful at the same time

Placing a hand into their outstretched grasp

Sends icy spikes through the veins

Eliminating any remaining life force

The world spins and you are whisked away from the outer world

Whisked to a placid lake

Deep within the depths of the earth

Lights flicker amid the still waters

Calling the damned to their final rest

Creaking ores split the surface

Your ship has arrived to carry you home

Cloaked in darkness the waters rush past

As you are ushered to the world of the dead

Where the two sit on thrones gilded of ages past.

Forever stopped in time
