Darkest Nights

By: Aundrea Methvin aka Emerald Star

Her final moments she remembered so well

She sat in her garden on her swing overgrown and wrapped in roses of ice

She had always loved them for they made her feel even when she was surrounded by snow

She swung for an hour knowing her time would come to a close

She didn’t intend to fall for a creature so dark yet

In her last moments when the Reaper appeared

His robes of ebony and scythe of gleaming silver

Surely, he should have frightened her yet

He was a gentleman when he approached her

He took her hand so gently

As if he were a suitor come to call on her

She was about to stand and allow him to calmly take her into his robes

But he bent over her hand and kissed it so gently that she did not feel the bone of his jawline or the smoothness of his teeth

Only the feel of a kiss on the back of her hand as if she were a lady or even queen of the lands

He helped her to stand and as she did

His eyes changed from hollow and empty to the color of a storm over the sea, a storm that she found herself longing to get lost in

He dropped his scythe, his long-dead heart started to beat once more

Her touch had started a change in him that he wasn’t sure he could handle.

Where her hand had sat in his bony one, new flesh seemed to wrap itself around his bones as if even the fates had decided to correct his loneliness if but for a moment

That moment grew as his robes changed color and the wings that had been stripped and torn from his back

Reappeared perfect and un-tattered the way they were before his fall.

He had only come to set her mortal fears aside and lead her to the Gates of Paradise beyond the veil of fear

She had faced him without a fearful tear

She had embraced him as a friend even though he was taking her from her kin

The reaper now an Angel so bright danced with her through the veil to the gates of Paradise

He tried to leave her side at the gates that he knew he could not cross

Only to find that leaving her would be the worst of all the darkness he had endured

His darkness stripped and his heart letting her, she pulled him past the gates

Now the Reaper is an Angel of light who dances with his bride even on the darkest nights

Where the stars seem to glow the brightest that is where they stand and kiss

The smaller ones that look like holes in the curtain of night is where they dance step for step never leaving the other side

This once reaper and his bride is now an Archangel with her at his side.
