The image above is called "Earthrise" — Astronaut William Anders took this photo during the Apollo 8 mission as they witnessed Earth rising from the dark side of the moon. Said to be one of the most influential photographs ever taken, and the inspiration for the environmental movement and implementation of Earth Day.
We set out to explore the moon and instead discovered the Earth.
-William Anders
Earth can also be seen from some of the other planets, typically appearing like a distant star.

Gorgeous.I adore the phrase cosmic velvet. Beautiful capsule of words. You are so good at haiku!!
So lovely, if only we would behave and preserve our precious home. Great poem.
Oh, I love "cosmic velvet" and of course, I love anything and everything cosmos-related. Love this haiku, too!
Now now now, you are just spectacular at haiku and brevity! Love this pally!
Oh this is so beautiful! I wish I could be so eloquent as this with so few words ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Lovely haiku Kristen. I wonder who is watching us right now. 😃
In cosmic velvet. That was so elegant. Loved your Haiku!
Very powerful Haiku and beautiful image
I wonder if this will be the start of a new trend among sidewalk artists: no more velvet Jesus or velvet Elvis; now it has to be velvet Earthrise? Nicely done.
I remember hearing the story of this picture in Neil degrasse Tyson's podcast about how it made everyone realise just how precious earth is, and how we needed to protect it. great poem and subject 😊
Beautiful!
