A Hard Won Race

She was a worthy opponent but couldn’t be beat

The day breaks and the dark cloud dissipates over the horizon,

A new dawn of possibilities for a future of change,

The weeds have been broken, discarded in the trash,

To allow room for the flowers to bloom as things rearrange.

😊

The air is fresher with the cruelty of some removed,

The revenge element a laugh in the face of danger,

A heart is opening to hope and dreams anew,

And love is no longer a distant stranger.

😊

The wind blows the cobwebs from a stale mind,

Worries fall to the bottom of life’s deepest well,

Anxiety sleeping comfortably in the arms of happiness,

And a heart is beating a staccato after a blissful farewell.

😊

The storm is rushing in the other direction,

Away from the sun’s adoration and dainty grace,

Excitement is the static from the lightening overhead,

As a smile lights up a once heavy face.

😊

Woes disintegrate under the blossom of anticipation,

As things fall into place as is well deserved,

It’s been a long time coming — a torturous wait,

In a life down and out and heavily reserved.

😊

Once the rotten aspects were dissolved in retribution,

The nights began to brighten under the glow of the moon,

Rewards showering over the wishes and lost joys,

Building to a crescendo of gifts received none too soon.

😊

Patterns of angst disappear with each smile revealed,

Sleepless nights hide from the hard won work completed,

Goodbye the best decision of necessity,

And the pain swallowed so it couldn’t be repeated.

😊

No longer waiting for the golden rays of tomorrow,

Content to wallow in the warmth of today,

The race has been won, the winner crowned in glory,

And she knows now that she’ll be okay.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

Goodbye the best decision of necessity. I loved that line because sometimes it indeed is! Awesome poem!
