Cowardice the Order of the Day

Leaving only one sure outcome

Life has bashed you into a splatter on the ground,

Taken your strength and wasted your integrity,

Until you are left cowering in the corner of the shadows,

As you forget the benefits of your chosen destiny.

You shake in defeat when the wind whispers her name,

Knowing you succumbed to the honour of lost dreams,

Years of living under a rock of your choosing,

Cuddling with the company of yesterday’s screams.

Sadness is the melancholy of your long days,

Loneliness the company that you know to appreciate,

Your ego the worst of your downfall,

Destroying the beauty in which you no longer relate.

Your heart has turned cowardly when it comes to love,

But your arrogance paves the way of your confusion,

You’ve closed your eyes to the possibilities that once was,

Blocking your heart to all other exclusion.

Foolishness wanders your mind in happy glee,

Thoughts power your arrogance into next week,

You’re a shell of a man that once favoured the past,

Until you’ve no idea of the sunshine you now seek.

Three times you slinked away with your tail between your legs,

Proud of the pain you left scurrying in your trail,

Revenge was your goal but instead her laughter rebound,

As you underestimated the one of a moderate scale.

She nailed you with her strength and showed you your weakness,

Downplaying the efforts of the man you have now evolved,

Cowardice your major personality trait of today,

And the loss of her love, which has finally dissolved.

She turned the tables on you and gave her farewell,

Taking your weapon and throwing it back in your face,

She’s strolling ahead to a wonderful future,

Knowing you’re trailing in her dust, back in last place.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.

Foolishness wanders your mind in happy glee I have no idea why but that line made me laugh so much. I think I've finally lost my mind, lol. Also, I'm glad she used his own weapon against him. Serves him right!

  • The one who puts themselves first shall be last & the one who puts themselves last shall be first. (I'm assuming the former is what he's spent a lifetime doing.)
