Hillary Dunn was ecstatic when Winsome Orrell accepted her query to be on The Thank Your Enemies Show. She wanted to thank Carrol Powell for lying and refusing to recommend her for the supervisor position at their posh job at The Burberry Investment Capital. A top-of-the-line Investment firm that reaps positive results for their clients. She recommended her ten years ago for the job. They were tight friends whose family did everything together.

Millicent Rivers the present supervisor was retiring and Hillary, one of her three assistants, put in an application to replace her. She required three votes. She was good friends with Carol, Josh, and Bryan. They got her back. Or so she taught.

Hillary was shocked when Carol showed up in a wheelchair.

She read about the shooting at the office, but her name wasn’t mentioned as one of the employees who were injured.

Seeing her again after the deception and quitting five years ago, and seeking employment elsewhere, her heart ached reading the fear and pain in her eyes.

Joyce Ingram, who got the position she wanted, was dead.

The chemistry between them wasn’t positive, Carrol had fear in her eyes and pain in her heart. Hillary had gratitude for life.

Silence urged on and Winsome broke it, “I have read both of your versions of what happened. Why did you not recommend your best friend?”

She stared at Hillary and blinked a few times as the truth threatened to expose something Hilary wasn’t aware of. Smiling, shoving it back down she notified, “She had five years of experience as an assistant, Joyce had eight.”

“So, you chose the best person for the job?” Winsome asked.

“Yes,” she said avoiding eye contact.

“You guys have been friends for ages. She recommended you for employment there with no experience.”

“I thanked her for that,” she recalls still evading eye contact.

“She was the one who guided your career and job, taking the time to show you the ropes and the best way of doing your job,” Winsome recalls from reading Hilary’s version.

“What’s wrong with choosing the most qualified person for the job?” she defends her choice still evading Hillary’s eyes.

Hillary cut in, “The decision that cost Joyce her life, I would have made the same one based on Blake’s work ethic, attitude, and behavior. I am just here to thank you for saving my life. If you hadn’t made the decision you made, I would be in the morgue instead of Joyce. I am sorry you got hurt in the process. “

The audience glared at her, as silence embraced her.

A voice cut in, “She was the one Blake wanted to kill!”

Many gasps followed the voice to the back, and Gordon Hill, a former employee who got fired stood up. Someone handed him a micro phone and she elaborates, “She was having an affair with Alric, Joyce’s husband.”

The audience gasped, mouths agape. Hilary’s eyes popped her head quickly turning to start at Carol. Shocked asked, ‘how? Why? When?’

Gordon went on, “When Joyce found out, she blackmailed her into not choosing you. Joyce had her under control as her lap dog for the five years you left. Blake found out and threatened to tell everyone and she got him fired. He came back for her and got Joyce instead. She will recover from her injuries!”

Shock squeezes into hearts, minds, souls, instincts, thoughts, and everywhere that regret and pain could touch. Carol wept, as Hillary eased over and hugged her.

“You still saved my life and I am still grateful for that!” Flowed from Hilary’s heart.

“I am sorry. I am so sorry!” Carol cried. “It was a brief affair and didn’t meant anything to both of us.”

“I am still grateful for you saving my life,” Carol repeats.

Life uses unimaginable ways to save our lives from the ones we thought were friends. Gratitude I give always for good and bad.

If your heart could speak, what would it say?

Go back in your life, and find the enemies that gave you a miracle wrapped up in deceit, envy, jealousy, cruelty, etc.

Did you thank your enemies today? Or did they thank you?

I pray none thanks me.

Thank you for reading this piece. I hope you enjoyed it.
