While we have limited control over resting metabolism, we can optimize it by adopting a healthy lifestyle and building lean muscle mass through exercise.

The thermionic effect of food refers to the energy required to break down the food we consume. Every time we eat, our bodies expend energy to digest, absorb, and process nutrients. While the thermic effect of food contributes to overall energy expenditure, its impact on weight loss is relatively minor compared to other factors.

Physical activity encompasses all forms of movement, including exercise and non-exercise activities like walking, house chores, and daily routines. While physical activity does contribute to calorie burn, research suggests that it typically accounts for only 10 to 30 percent of our daily energy use. This means that the majority of calories burned each day come from resting metabolism, over which we have little control.

Calories In vs. Calories Out

When it comes to weight loss, the concept of "calories in" versus "calories out" plays a critical role. While we have full control over the calories we consume, our control over the calories we burn through physical activity is more limited. This discrepancy can make relying solely on exercise for weight loss challenging.

Consider a study that examined the weight loss effects of running in a 200-pound man. Despite running for an hour, four days a week for a month, the man only lost around 5 pounds, assuming everything else stayed the same. However, various factors come into play when we increase our exercise levels.

Adaptations to Exercise

Engaging in regular exercise often leads to behavioral and physiological adaptations that can hinder weight loss progress. One common adaptation is an increase in hunger. After a vigorous workout, it's not uncommon to feel ravenous and consume larger portions or indulge in calorie-dense foods. This compensatory behavior can offset the calorie burn achieved through exercise.
