Welcome back to Reflections from Within by Innominaire!

This Week’s Topic: Control (#7)

Last Week’s Question

What can we truly control in life and how can focusing on these aspects of our lives help us find greater peace and contentment?

I believe that we can only truly control our own actions and attitudes. Focusing on these aspects of our lives can bring us greater peace and contentment. In a world where so much is beyond our control, it is important to remember that we have the power to shape our own lives through our choices and actions. By focusing on what is within our control and leaving the rest to Allah, we can find a sense of inner peace and fulfilment.

Back to this week's blog...

Hey there, have you ever felt anxious and uncertain about things that are out of your control? I know I have, especially when it comes to job interviews and other important events. But, I recently discovered the Stoic concept of the dichotomy of control, and it has been a game-changer for me.

The basic idea is to focus on what we can control and let go of what we can't control. This means that we should put our efforts into things like our own actions, attitudes, and thoughts, rather than worrying about external circumstances that are beyond our control. It's a simple yet powerful philosophy that has helped me to feel more calm, centred, and resilient in the face of uncertainty.

How else is this idea perceived?

But, the Stoic philosophy is not the only one that emphasizes letting go of what is beyond our control. In Islam, there are two concepts that are similar: Tawakkul and Sabr. Tawakkul is the idea of putting our trust in Allah and relying on Him to care for us, while Sabr is the idea of being patient and persevering through difficult times.

What Can I Do?

Combining the ideas of Stoicism and Islam, we can learn to let go of our worries and anxieties and trust in a higher power to guide us through life's challenges. Here are some tips to help you apply these concepts in your daily life:

  • Focus on your own actions and attitudes, rather than worrying about external circumstances.
  • Take action and do your best, but let go of the outcome and trust in a higher power to guide you.
  • Practice mindfulness and gratitude to stay present in the moment and appreciate what you have.
  • Be patient and persevering through difficult times, trusting that everything happens for a reason.
  • Remember that you are not alone and that there is a higher power that is always with you, guiding and supporting you.

So, whether you're a Stoic or a Muslim, or both, the concept of the dichotomy of control can help you find inner peace and resilience in the face of uncertainty. So, let go of what you can't control and focus on what you can control, and trust in a higher power to guide you through life's ups and downs.
