My Aspirations for 2024
I joined Vocal in May 2022, and didn’t write a single thing for the entire year. I saw it advertised, and had extra money that month, so I decided ‘sure, why not?’ and paid for the year subscription. I saw emails come through every once in a while, for the challenges, and ‘What’s on Vocal?,’ but I never bothered to read them or have a go.

Vocal Writing Aspirations
My writing aspirations on Vocal for this year is to increase my usage of the platform, not just completing the challenges but also reading and commenting on other creators’ stories. This past year I have not completed many challenges, or I have done a draft but not submitted the story within the time allowed for that challenge, time management is something I need to work on this year. It can be difficult to manage my own time as I work as a home carer and do shift work and can be working all day and I also have my little girl to look after as well.

To be Vocal
To take courage and leaps into the unknown is not for a control freak and not for the perfectionist. The unknown is beauty in the eye of the beholder and if you behold with a telescopic eye you may miss the detail awaiting discovery under a microscope. To subtract the ego to make room for the humbleness and allow flaws to be woven into masterpieces.

defeating the, "who cares?"
1. All or Nothing My first Vocal goal would be to challenge myself by submitting a story to every challenge- no matter how much I have come to loathe poem challenges. I find when it comes to poems I clam up. I try to figure out some abstractly written message full of flowery prose, perhaps something that does makes not a bit of sense, but it ends up being more up-front than I originally thought. I figured it would be good to push myself to write more in order to accomplish my ultimate goal of winning a challenge on Vocal.

Looking Inward, Looking Forward
I suppose the logical place to start when considering my aspirations as a creator for the coming year would be simply to “create more.” I haven’t done any writing, drawing, or creating of any sort in some time, with no submissions here in almost a year, no posts to my blog in over a year, and nothing in my sketchbook in at least two. Working full-time certainly occupies a not insignificant portion of my week, to be sure; I’ve also been studying for my master’s degree, working towards multiple IT certifications, and studying Japanese. When I’m not working on one of those tasks, my remaining time is devoted to gaming, or mindlessly handling my phone, switching back-and-forth between a half-dozen apps or scrolling through social media.

Ascension
A lot can happen in one day, let alone in one year. The year 2023 was a very difficult one. It was most certainly a year full of trials, tribulations, lessons and loss. I am a single mother of two. I have two daughters. I became a mother at the age of twenty. I actually ended up walking across the stage at 5 months pregnant with my oldest daughter. I waddled across that stage proudly! Ten years later, I was surprised with my youngest daughter. Nice gap, huh?

My Very Vocal Goals
First of all, oh, how I procrastinated for this one! Yes, I’m going to be very honest and say straight away that I genuinely wanted to put this piece together, but was struck with fear and doubt over my abilities to make a good year for myself as a writer, and I’m going to say just why, as well as how I hope to change that!

A Mother's Sacrifice
Start writing...In the heart of a bustling city, where the noise of traffic drowned out the whispers of the wind and the streets thrummed with the rhythm of life, lived a woman named Abigail. Her days were a whirlwind of activity—a constant juggling act of work, household chores, and the endless demands of raising her three young children on her own. Abigail's husband had walked out on them years ago, leaving her to shoulder the burden of providing for their family alone. With no formal education and few marketable skills, Abigail had been forced to take whatever odd jobs she could find to make ends meet. From cleaning houses to washing dishes at a local diner, she worked tirelessly from dawn till dusk, her hands calloused and her back bent with the weight of her responsibilities. But amidst the hardships and the struggles, there was one thing that kept Abigail going—a fierce, unwavering love for her children. They were her reason for waking up every morning, her driving force, her everything. She would do whatever it took to ensure that they had a roof over their heads, food on the table, and the opportunity to pursue their dreams. As her children grew older, Abigail watched with pride as they excelled in school, their bright minds hungry for knowledge and eager to learn. She scrimped and saved every penny she earned to ensure that they had the tools they needed to succeed—a new pair of shoes for school, a set of textbooks, a warm winter coat to keep out the biting cold. But as the years passed and her children grew older, the challenges only seemed to multiply. The cost of living continued to rise, while Abigail's wages remained stagnant. There were days when she had to choose between paying the rent and putting food on the table, days when the weight of her responsibilities threatened to crush her spirit. Yet through it all, Abigail remained steadfast in her determination to provide for her family. She took on extra shifts at work, worked double shifts on weekends, and even took on a second job cleaning offices late into the night. She sacrificed her own needs and desires for the sake of her children, her own dreams taking a backseat to their wellbeing. But as the years passed and her children grew older, Abigail couldn't help but feel a pang of sadness—a sadness born of the realization that she had missed out on so much of their childhood, so many precious moments that she could never get back. She longed to spend more time with them, to watch them grow and thrive, to be there for them in the moments that mattered most. And yet, despite the sacrifices she had made, Abigail knew that she had given her children the greatest gift of all—the gift of love, sacrifice, and unwavering devotion. They knew, deep down in their hearts, that their mother would move heaven and earth for them, that she would always be there to catch them when they fell, to lift them up when they stumbled, to cheer them on as they chased their dreams. As Abigail sits alone in her small apartment, the weight of the world heavy on her shoulders, she takes a moment to reflect on the journey that has brought her to this point. She knows that the road ahead will be filled with challenges and obstacles, but she also knows that she is strong enough to face whatever comes her way, as long as she has her children by her side. And so, with a fierce determination burning in her heart and a love that knows no bounds, Abigail sets out to conquer the challenges that lie ahead—to provide for her family, to give her children the opportunities they deserve, and to show them, each and every day, just how much they mean to her. For in the end, it is love that sustains her, love that drives her, love that gives her the strength to keep going, no matter what.

Better Than Before
A few days into the new year, I, along with other Vocal writers, received an email from Vocal summing up my 2023 on the platform. The email also mentioned it was the best year yet for Vocal. While it may have been Vocal’s best year to date, it certainly wasn’t my best year on Vocal.
