Learning to Bloom in Adversity
As the second week of my Fall semester comes to a close, I've been reflecting on my collegiate journey. More than just remembering good times, new friends I made, or anything else, I'm reflecting on how I managed to graduate with an A.A. degree, then a B.A. degree, and now trying to obtain my Master's degree. It all seems too good to be true at times and I've had the odds stacked against me; I'm a first-generation college student (neither of my parents obtained anything more than their high school diplomas), multi-ethnic, bisexual, female, and... I'm disabled.

Life is tough, and success isn’t milk and honey. You need to work for it, hard. Although, I never really rely on the pish-posh shortcuts that are trending on the internet, the ONE thing that can transform your life kind of stuff...

I have several ideas on how to volunteer my time in my city. I can become a volunteer reading tutor, which would be a great experience to add to my resume. I need to do something with my time besides writing. I also need to join city council at some point. The library also needs library service volunteers, which I can also do. I’m looking to do something with my time daily besides my career readiness classes. I want to join my homeowners' association group for example. I can also take a disaster readiness class because I really need to put together a disaster readiness kit before the next earthquake hits. I was also thinking about starting up a routine with volunteering for NAMI.

Try it, renew yourself and get ready. Many opportunities will be on the way, and they will make you smile! If life is no longer able to satisfy your desires. If you have looked in the mirror and thought you would like to be living different experiences, change it. Change your appearance, your way of behaving, raise your head. Learn how to face the world, because it can't keep making you scared or make you feel small.

As early as I can remember, there have been two items at the top of my bucket list. Anytime a question about future goals, dreams, and accomplishments was asked, I could confidently answer:

When I was younger, I didn't really enjoy writing as much as the next person. I did enjoy reading though. But, there was something about writing that just made me want to throw out the pen and paper. It could have been the hand cramps, or the topics in English class I never enjoyed. I was fourteen at the time. I wanted to hang out with my friends, play sports, go to the movies, just have a good time and have fun. That was until I started to daydream and had to get these ideas on paper.

There's a lot of talks about race and representation in the media today. I think the media is making it a bigger deal than it should be. Some of the interviews I've read recently had me questioning the motives of the article. Do we need to see a representation of ourselves to know what we want to do in life? I don't think so. If there's something that we truly want to do we should find ways of doing it. I know it's impossible for everyone to think alike but the media makes it sound like there's a general consensus that we need others to pave a path for us. Why do we even need to follow paths? With everything changing today will this even be talked about in the future?

Life is a cycle. Not only because we follow 12 months, 365 days, 7 days a week... But because we are made of phases, moments, and crises.

While I was growing up, I discovered many of my now interests. I even had passions! At an early age as six years old I loved to dance. LOVED. ADORED, even. From ballet to hip-hop. I took classes until I was 14 years old. For eight years I danced my a** off, with passion and devotion. When I got 11, I realised that music was a major part of my life since I was in my mother’s stomach. My father used to play guitar to my mom, so I would stop moving or kicking her belly. So, for five years I was in a music program at school. I played flute and piano in a harmonic orchestra (made of wind instruments only, in comparison with a symphonic orchestra that has both wind and strings instruments). Being in this program throughout my high school years helped me to have good grades and to keep me focused on positive stuff, even though I was going through some tough situations that got me really depressed for few years.

I can't recall how many nights it's been since those weird dreams, but I remember them so vividly that it's like I had them last night.

Hi, my name is Jonathann Richardson, and I haven’t written anything in a very long time. I believe you should always do what you love. If there’s that one thing you’ve been dying to do, do it! This life is too short to not do things that make you happy. This may be a corny saying, but “everybody dies but not everybody lives.”

I recently read Shoe Dog by Phil Knight, and The Art of War written by Chinese Military General and Philosopher Sun Tzu. It got me thinking deeply about the way that success and victory, which are of course all subjective to the individual, can be achieved in day-to-day life. Here is what I came up with.
