What is assertiveness?

Assertiveness is the ability of being able to stand up for yourself without being too pushy, but also standing your ground. It's being able to say no, but not having that mean you are a disrespectful person or aggressive. Being able to be more assertive can help you in all areas of life - it can help you become a more confident person, and it can help your relationships with friends and family.

Assertiveness is not necessarily about dominating others and getting what you want all the time - it's also knowing when to accept defeat, learning when to say no, and knowing how to be okay with making mistakes.

It's being able to get what you want, but also being able to give others space. If you wish to read more about my work, please visit my website Amra and Elma, which provides new york digital agency and influencer agency or follow my Instagram.

This is what being assertive looks like:

-You are confident with who you are

-You can express your opinions and thoughts without hurting others' feelings

-You know how to accept defeat

-You know when to say no, but also know how to do it respectfully

-You know how to apologize and take responsibility for your mistakes.

This is what being assertive doesn't look like:

-Being pushy, demanding, or aggressive

-Constantly feeling the need to have everything your way all the time

-Belittling others in order to get them to do what you want. This is more passive-aggressive behavior.

Having more assertiveness skills can help you in long-term relationships as well as short-term interactions. Friendships, romantic relationships, and even family relationships can be more positive when the people involved have a more equal level of assertiveness. It's easier to get along with each other if both parties are being heard without one feeling dominated or pushed around.

Being more assertive can be hard to do at first, especially if you are not used to it. It's also important to keep in mind that being assertive is not about forcing your opinions and thoughts on other people - if they don't want them, then it's okay for them to decline. A good way to become more assertive is to practice situations that you are already familiar with. Think of some situations where you know the outcome - for example, if you have a test coming up or if you want food at dinner. When these situations come up again, imagine yourself being assertive in relation to these situations. You can even write out some phrases or sentences that you could say if the situation arises again.

The more you practice, the easier it becomes! Being more assertive takes time and patience, but is well worth it in the long-term. It's okay not to be perfect at it, and it's okay to make mistakes. Just keep trying if you messed up the first time around!

Once you identify your rights and choose to believe in them, you’ll find honoring them easier. When you honor them, you’ll stop spending energy pacifying or pleasing others who dishonor them.

The truth is everyone wants to be more confident, but not everyone knows how to be assertive. Assertive falls right between passive and aggressive. If you're passive about voicing your opinion, you may come across as submissive. And if you are aggressive with your viewpoint, you may come across as a hostile or, even worse, a bully.

But if you learn to be assertive, you can express yourself without being passive or aggressive, and you will have a better chance of getting what you want.
