My First Story and Introduction to My Background
Why I Joined Vocal as Writer and Community Builder
A New Chapter: Why I’m Joining the Vocal Community as a Retired Mental Health Professional
Hello friends,
Beginning again in a new creative space always carries a mixture of curiosity, humility, and hope. After five decades of work as a psychiatrist, writer, and editor, I find myself here on Vocal, opening the first page of what I hope will be a meaningful chapter of connection.
Before chatting with my mentor and long term friend Dr Mehmet Yildiz, owner of the Digitalmehmet Content Ecosystem and ILLUMINATION Integrated publications on Medium, Substack, and Patreon. I have never heard about Medium, Substack, Patreon, and finally Vocal Media. He introduced me to these new platforms and guided me to start as a creator.
I recently joined Medium as a writer and volunteer editor on his ILLUMINATION publications and also created a personal publication on Substack called The Thoughtful Therapist.
Yesterday he said it would also be good to join the friendly Vocal Media community. I agreed an created an account. I will join the Vocal+ soon to get the benefits he articulated clearly.
About My Background
My professional life has been devoted to mental health. I retired from clinical practice in 2023 after fifty-one years of sitting across from people in all walks of life, listening to their stories, their pain, their resilience, and their capacity for change.
Psychiatry taught me that every person carries a private world inside them, often unseen, but always worthy of understanding. Those thousands of conversations over the years remain my greatest education.
I did not come here to write textbooks or polished lectures. Instead, I want to share insights in a way that feels approachable: short reflections, human stories, and distilled lessons that might resonate with readers who are navigating their own challenges.
I believe in taking what can feel complex in psychology and neuroscience and translating it into everyday language. My hope is that by doing so, these ideas become tools, accessible, practical, and maybe even comforting.
My journey as a writer began long before my medical career. As a child, I filled notebooks with thoughts and stories. Science and medicine eventually became my path, but writing never left me.
Alongside my work in clinics and hospitals, I contributed to academic journals and helped colleagues refine their manuscripts and books. Editing became another way to nurture voices, a quieter but equally rewarding form of service.
In recent years, retirement has given me the gift of time to return more fully to writing for broader audiences. Through friends and colleagues, I explored platforms like Medium and Substack, sharing essays and personal stories that combined professional insights with personal reflections.
Those experiences reminded me of something vital: writing is not only about self-expression, but also about community. We write to be read, yes, but also to connect, to spark conversations, and to remind each other that we are not alone in our struggles or our hopes.
That is why I am here on Vocal. I was drawn to this platform not simply as a place to publish, but as a space where creators encourage and learn from one another. From what I have seen, Vocal is not only about the story on the page but also about the dialogue that follows, the comments, the resonance, the way one person’s words can ripple into another’s life.
In this first story, I do not want to present myself as an expert with all the answers. I have learned too often in psychiatry that certainty can be misleading. Instead, I come as a fellow traveler, someone who has listened deeply and thought long about the human mind, but who is still curious, still learning, and still humbled by the complexity of human experience.
What might you expect from me here? Likely a mixture of reflections on mental health, short narratives drawn from decades of practice (with identities carefully protected), and musings on how science, philosophy, and lived experience meet in our daily lives.
Sometimes I may share lessons about resilience or healing. Other times I may write about the challenges of aging, the role of creativity in well-being, or the way cultural shifts affect how we understand the mind.
Above all, I hope to write with honesty and warmth. If even one story sparks recognition in a reader if someone feels less isolated, or gains a new perspective that will be enough.
Joining a new community often means starting from zero. I come here with no illusions about followers, algorithms, or quick recognition. I am more interested in the slower, more rewarding process of finding kindred spirits writers and readers who care about ideas, stories, and the ways words can build bridges.
So here I am, grateful to begin. Thank you, Vocal community, for making space for newcomers like me. I look forward to reading your stories, learning from your perspectives, and, in time, contributing my own voice to this shared conversation.
I work as a content curator for the Digitalmehmet Content Ecosystem supporting over 38,000 writers through the Substack Mastery Boost program founded and led by Dr Mehmet Yildiz. He allowed me to be a guest blogger on his community blogs. He also gave me the opportunity to serve as an editor for his bestselling Substack Mastery book.
As a community giveback activity, I became an editor for the ILLUMINATION Scholar publication and a peer reviewer for the new Journal of Emerging Technologies in Neuroscience.
With respect and kindness,
Albert
