What is meditation?

When we think of the word meditation, an image comes to our mind that a saint, Mahatma or some person is simply sitting in Padmasana with his eyes closed. This is the first effect of the word meditation on us. And when someone tells us to meditate, we think that we will have to close our eyes and sit in Padmasana or Sukhasana. You have to close your eyes and think about the image of some god or goddess. This is the perception regarding meditation of a person who has heard about meditation for the first time or has never meditated.

The stage after this is that what do we do when we try to concentrate by listening here and there. We sit and close our eyes and think about meditation or if we have heard or read from someone, then we try to bring the image of some deity in our mind. Or try to chant some mantra or meditate on breathing etc. according to what you have heard or read. What happens during this time is that after two to five minutes, we get bored and immediately open our eyes and come to the present world, and complain that I cannot concentrate etc. This is not in our control.

For most people, meditation is a boring subject. Coming under the influence of some Saint, Mahatma or Siddha Guru, we take some meditation method or knowledge from him but do not continue practicing it for a long time. As time passes, we become disappointed and our answer is that we don't feel like meditating. When we say that we do not feel like meditating, the formula for meditating is hidden in this. We say that the mind is not felt in meditation, it means that the mind has to be engaged in meditation. It is not right to say that it will have to be applied because applying it requires effort and some hard work. In other words, you have to happily cultivate your interest in meditating in every situation. First thing is interest and second thing is some patience. Patience means that while meditating for a while, we stop and see what the result is. But this stopping should not be done forcefully or with hard work, rather it should be done with joy and happiness, it should be done with curiosity. One should stop as a witness. Have we ever wondered why we don't feel like meditating because in reality meditating is the art of killing the mind. The mind understands that if we meditate, we (the mind) have gone. Well, we will consider this further.

What happens when a completely new person with no experience in meditation tries to meditate? He closes his eyes and sits in Sukhasana and as soon as he closes his eyes, a black screen appears in front of him. What is this black screen? Actually this is Chidakash. Chidakaash means Chid, i.e. mind, sky of mind. The knowledge acquired from the mind i.e. the collection of senses which operates on the basis of the consciousness of one's own soul. This is the mind. And sky means empty or empty space where there is nothing. So when the mind encounters the sky (empty space), it gets bored within a short time. Why does this mind get bored because the mind stops collecting the knowledge of the senses and faces the sky i.e. the empty space where there is nothing. Let me clarify here how the mind is the storehouse of knowledge of the senses. The five senses are eyes, nose, ears, skin and tongue. The knowledge acquired through the use of these senses becomes the mind. Just as the tongue has the habit of tasting delicious foods, it remains engaged in the same until it finds that food again, or until it consumes new foods. Similar is the case with other senses also. Well, if we talk about senses then the topic will be left out and our topic is meditation whereas senses are a very broad subject, we will talk about it some other time. Hope you have understood the above sentence that mind is a collection of senses. So when we sit in meditation with our eyes closed, then according to the nature of the mind, we expect something to happen there too. But on the contrary, the mind faces the sky i.e. the empty space. The mind becomes frightened because here arrangements have been made for the death of the mind. Why do we meditate with our eyes closed because, first of all, 80 percent of our contact with the outside world is through our two eyes. Through these we mostly remain connected to the world and the mind keeps gaining momentum. But during meditation, our eyes are closed, that is, closing the way of contact with the outside world is a solution to the death of the mind. What the mind does in such a situation must have been the experience of most of you. The mind starts using its power of imagination, it either starts wandering in the events that happened in the past or starts dreaming about the future. Hey brother, the mind will find some way to survive, as a result of this, the mind starts wandering in its experiences of the past or imagining the future. And the result is a flood of thoughts while meditating. These are the incidents that we encounter while meditating. And most of the people know the result of lack of attention. What should be done in meditation to avoid all this, I have briefly explained in the beginning itself how to stop there in which emotion.

What exactly is meditation? Before considering this, let us see what the scriptures say in this regard.
