Before we are born our soul makes a plan for this lifetime. Much like a map for this lifetime. It contains our life purpose, life lessons, and soul contracts.

From the perspective of the soul, we are here to learn. One of the ways we learn is through life lessons. They are a part of our life purpose as well as our soul agreements with other people. It can be difficult to spot our lessons at times, but if we pay attention they become clear.

What is a life lesson?

Life lessons are experiences that we go through in order to achieve our soul goals for this lifetime. These experiences are often challenging and test us. If they were easy, we wouldn’t be forced to stretch, learn and grow.

Think of it like going to university, in this case, life is the university. Your life purpose is the degree you are studying for. The lessons are the classes. Just like in a university, the classes aren’t easy, they challenge you, cause you to go beyond your comfort zone, and ultimately change.

How life lessons work

How you encounter a life lesson in life, is through the experiences you have. For example, if you have a life lesson in compassion, you would go through experiences that requires compassion or displays compassion.

Sometimes the experiences will be direct, You might witness compassion being given to others, or the lack of it. Other times it might be about compassion toward yourself, maybe you are pushing yourself too hard. Often, lessons are learned from an opposite experience, meaning you experience the lack of something and learn the value of it that way.

Generally, a life lesson is something we will learn at different levels throughout our lives. You may have learned compassion toward others in your 30's but still need to work on it for yourself in your 40's. Going back to the example of classes, it’s as if you are taking advanced classes as you learn more and more about the lesson.

We practice our life lessons with other people. The compassion lesson then, in a romantic relationship, teaches how to consider your partner with a compassionate heart, and to consider your own role in the relationship with compassion as well.

Often the lessons we are working on in this lifetime are carried over, unfinished work from past lifetimes. They are chosen by our soul as something to focus on in this lifetime.

How to know if it’s a lesson

It takes some reflection to uncover your lessons. Observe your current relationships, romantic, friend, family, and self. Notice if there are any commonalities. Are you often the one giving? That might be a lesson in service, part of that lesson is balance, learning how to give and receive.

Do you notice that you have a lot of experiences within relationships (romantic or otherwise) where you are lied to or betrayed in some way? This could indicate a lesson in trust.

Patterns of behavior and experiences we have are telltale signs of lessons not learned. Having a history of romantic relationships with unavailable partners, for example, could be lessons in self-love, boundaries, or forgiveness..

Examples of life lessons

Communication- This is a very important life lesson, it is important for a few reasons. One, it encourages self-expression and truth. Two, it opens up lines of dialogue between people or groups. Three, it encourages connecting in ways we wouldn’t if we didn’t do the first two things. The discovery of truth, opening lines of dialogue, building connections, all bring about healing, change, and evolution.

Many times, when communication is a lesson, there will be periods of feeling stuck, unheard, miscommunications can happen or even a total breakdown in communication altogether. When there is a failure to communicate, there can be trouble. This is how countries go to war, how couples find themselves in divorce, and how families experience rifts for years. Communication is key to bringing about resolution, healing, kindness, compassion, and peace.

Forgiveness- This is a lesson that most souls will have to exercise in some way and it can help with many other lessons. Healing, creativity, inspiration, spiritual development, all types of issues can be resolved with forgiveness. One of the biggest hurdles with this lesson is self-forgiveness.

Forgiveness can show up through very difficult experiences, they are often centered around family, love, friends, the people we are closest with. They can be small lessons or much larger ones, but no matter what forgiveness is meant to lead to more heart-filled experiences, although it can at times be a long, difficult road to get there.

Expression- We may decide to choose expression as a life lesson when we are working on creativity, healing, being a messenger of any type. Expression helps connect with truth so we may also plan on utilizing this lesson to develop ourselves spiritually.

Expression lessons show up where we need to speak our truth or when we need to get in touch with our truth. It provides the opportunity to connect within and get to know ourselves better. There may be experiences witnessing those who have lost their truth, acting out of alignment with who they truly are, so we will know how not to be.

Creativity- This is a life lesson that can work in many ways, it is about messages, communication, exchanges, and more. Inspiration is at the heart of this life lesson; it is important for those who have it to follow their inspiration and not judge it. Judgment can be a hard habit to break and many people who have creative interests will stop short of pursuing it seriously over fear of judgment.

Creativity is not limited to the obvious, artists, musicians, writers, but can be expanded to include any type of idea, interest, or pursuit that is unique. It’s in how we look at life, or how we come to the table, how we solve problems or work with others. It means to think outside the box and to rely on that ability.

Life lessons are a daily part of life, we can find them in all life areas and all the things we do. Reflect on yours to get more insight!
