I was done...
Maybe you’ve seen me around at a mall shopping with my son Donovan. If you have, you’d probably never guess I was battling cervical cancer or that I was a single mom with no baby daddy support. Maybe you could take a look at me or my Instagram @xnauli and calculate that I have it all together and my life couldn’t possibly be hard. But that’s just it. I think you can agree that life can be hard and life isn’t always Instagram pretty. The only difference is made between the one who goes harder and the one who goes softer.

The Strong Woman’s Burden
I hear so many women speak about the burden that the expectation of strength brings to their lives. When am I allowed to be weak? When am I allowed not to have all the answers or solutions? When will I be allowed to name my pain and be given the space and room to heal? While I am broken and shattered by this world, I am still expected to carry the load of the daily functions, whether it be family, work, school, society, etc., there is an expectation that I still show up. At some point we must accept our humanity. While being superhuman would be nice, the reality is that we’re just as fragile as any other living thing, and we also require nurturing, and emotional, physical, and spiritual nourishment. From my own personal experience strength sometimes happens, not because I choose it, but because there is no other choice. There is also an element of fear that abounds when I think about weakness. Even though it is quite natural and human to have moments of weakness, there is a fear that arises at the pain that vulnerability can bring. If I open myself up, will there be supports to help me heal, or will someone just pour salt in the wound.

A Feel Oh, So Fecal (I)
As an aspiring writer, painter, director, musician, game designer, and beautician, I have technically achieved each of these titles by accomplishing each occupations' outcome. I wrote a novel, directed some short films, produced a dozen or so albums, made a functional game once, and I bleached and dyed my own hair. Yet, my total lack of fiscal gain via any of these vocations relegates me to the designated "aspirant" rather the title alone. In my mind, at least. Which leads me to the conclusion: the issue is solely my mindset, and I am, otherwise, successfully an Artist.

New Year Resolutions
Every. Single. Year It's the same old story. 31st December comes and we are all making these amazing goals for the next year. Lose weight, get a job, get a dog (this should always be on a list), work out 5 times a week. You get the theme. January kicks in and for about five days, for the most part, you keep the new year resolutions and then suddenly you stop doing dry January because there was a huge night out that could not be missed.

I'm playing a long game of Influence. How do I know if my influence is making a difference?
The worst kind of waste is the discarded actions we do not recognize as worthy. We have the capacity to learn from most experiences we participate in. This is a question I have been asked over the years many times by those seeking to plan out their influence strategies. As we begin working with people there's a need to meet the person where they are and feel what is being shared is meaningful. We all seek to help in different capacities and there's no shortage of opportunities to challenge us when we are actively participating in life. As long as you are encouraging the subject's best self and your own, creating good memories with people around you, and assisting people by sharing your knowledge, nothing that you do can be wasteful. Inspire the best in each other as you learn, teach, and have adventures. Service is a performance art and we offer it to each other daily. You can remain silent and have someone be grateful you made sure they were not alone.

Limitations of consciousness: Exploring Attentional Blink
As you shift your attention from one thing of interest to another, a gap in attention called attentional blink occurs in your awareness of the world. It lasts for about half a second, so we barely notice it. The shocking, interesting, or emotionally stimulating event is the more likely we will lose peripheral awareness of anything else outside that event for longer. This phenomenon occurs because our brain has limited attentional resources. If you have ever tried to focus on multiple things at once, and you know you have if you are an active citizen of our modern society. You likely discovered you could not completely hold full attention to all the multi-tasked tasks. You might even have noticed that some things could not be consciously tracked well as you were multitasking and simply slipped right past you unnoticed. This cognitive factor is not often trained by most and yet plays a part in every action we do in society. Everything from following a magic trick, being convinced, hypnotized, and is actionable as we go through the tasks of our day. Just think about driving on a rainy day and talking on the phone or walking across the street as you text on your phone. Sometimes the attentional blink can cost us our life.

A Thing Or Two About New Year Resolution
It starts with a "why?" It was about a fortnight before the New Year of 2012. I was studying to be a personal trainer at the time. During one of the classes, I had my waist and hip measured for a class assignment. When my classmate, who were assigned to do my measurement, told me that my waistline was about 42 inches, I was in total shock as I thought I was reasonably fit and my waistline could not be more than 36 inches. It was really disappointing to be told that this number would put me in the "obese" category.

HAVING LUPUS, IS NOT A VACATION. PERIOD
“OMG, you’re at home all day, must be fun! Right? Why do you complain, I wish I had the same life as you!” This statement I have been hearing and listening to past many many years of my life from people who do NOT know me fully, and even sometimes from my friends.

What's Your 2020?
Do you have it all figure out for the New Year 2020?, to be honest I thought I did; but the truth is I don't, and I realize it's okay. I wanted to do so much this year, and I know the year just beginning, but I just couldn't wait to get started, then it hit me, start what? I did not have a clue and I still don't. I guess my New Year's Resolution was inside my head, or just a dream I have not waken up from. New Year's 2020, got me thinking; I should just be happy that I survive another year, and I will be able to figure it out one day at a time, so my New Year's Resolution is I don't have any because I AM MY NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTION!
