Frederick Douglass

Don't Block Your Blessings
Don’t Block Your Blessings! By: Sean Kenneally Negativity is like a drug. At your weakest moments it pulls you in, and it will hold you down as long as you allow it to. I speak from personal experience when I say no one can truly pull you out of it and you’ll never understand why. If you turn to drugs and alcohol you’ll slowly start to spiral. Sex is never enough, and the thought that “if I just get a partner all this pain will go away” will only lead to a messy break up that brings you right back to negativity. These are all temporary. Friends and family can help but even they will one day have to leave. The only thing in life that you will always have, no matter what, is yourself. I have struggled mightily throughout my life with anxiety and depression, and I always said the world was against me until a few days ago something spectacular happened. Now, for you to truly understand what I mean, I will give you a little back story about my struggles. Hopefully this will help you get through whatever struggles you are facing.

Ponder
In life, we ponder how things will be, who we will become, what degree or certification we will get, what our job will be, etc. There is so much that we consistently go and back worth with just to make sense of it all. We never really want to process it because once we do, it feels like everything is falling apart. But in actual truth, it’s the tiny, medium, odd shaped, and large pieces coming together to form a picture. The picture of the overview of what you have been overlooking.

Afternoon Memoir
It was cold, just like it is now. And it was late in the afternoon, just like it is now. I had bought a small quiche and some salad, like any weekday when I found myself not wanting to cook. A ham and cheese quiche. I even remember the taste of the crust. I was probably on my way to the hardware store two blocks away from the apartment. It was this tiny place- like all other places nearby, to be honest. No one had more than 30 square feet of property, as far as I can remember. And perhaps that’s why it felt so nice; every store was its own little world. And you know me, I hate shopping, so you’d find me all over the place. Supermarket, butcher shop, that small cheese and cold meats place. I probably wandered around the flea market too, but it’s hard to shop for furniture when you live in a rented studio apartment.

Twelve Steps to Sustain Hope
I've sat down repeatedly over the past week to write an article outlining my favorite "sustainability hack," and struggled. Not because I don't have favorites--there are many, and I'll list them below--but because the biggest hack I am still seeking for myself is how to stay hopeful that sustainability is possible.
