From Dreams to Darkness: A Mother’s Silent Battle

Married Young, Trapped at Home, and Still Dreaming Big—The Untold Story of My First Fall Before the Rise

By Tayyaba MalikPublished about a year ago • 3 min read

Hi…

This is the beginning of my story.

It’s not perfect. It’s not glamorous.

But it’s real. And maybe, just maybe—it’s a story someone out there needs to hear.

I got married while I was still studying.

People around me said, “Wow, that’s so lucky!”

As if I had secured everything—a husband, a home, a life all figured out.

But deep down, I wasn’t ready. Not really.

Not emotionally. Not mentally.

I had dreams—big ones. I wanted to build a life based on who I was, not just the role I was expected to play.

In the very first year of marriage, I gave birth to my daughter.

A tiny piece of heaven who changed everything.

She became my whole world. My heartbeat.

And I would never trade her for anything.

But with that one beautiful change… everything else around me froze.

My books? Closed.

My dreams? On pause.

My ambitions? Shelved, gathering dust.

I had studied engineering.

I wasn’t just another girl with a degree—I had passion.

I wanted to work in research labs, build something, contribute to science, make my name matter.

But now, I was in the kitchen, not the lab.

Washing bottles instead of handling glassware.

Cooking meals instead of solving equations.

Changing diapers instead of changing the world.

And in my head, I kept telling myself:

“This isn’t how it was supposed to be.

My work… my career… it belongs out there, not within these four walls.”

That thought became a cage.

And slowly, I started to believe that maybe… I had already failed.

The days blurred together.

Morning turned into night with nothing in between but survival.

I started watching others move forward—friends achieving things, colleagues publishing papers—

And I… I was standing still, stuck in place.

That’s when the darkness crept in.

It doesn’t shout—it whispers.

“You’re behind.”

“You’re not enough.”

“You missed your chance.”

I lost belief in myself.

I felt like I was disappearing in slow motion.

The ambitious girl I once was… became a stranger in the mirror.

Depression didn’t announce itself.

It came quietly.

In the silence of the night, in the stillness of a baby’s nap, in the moments I stared blankly at the wall.

I was there… but not really living.

But then I’d look at her—my daughter.

And something inside me would whisper,

“You can’t give up. Not for her.”

So I kept going. I smiled when I didn’t feel like smiling.

I played when I had no energy left.

I held it all in, even when I wanted to scream.

And I hoped—hoped that maybe, one day, I’d find myself again.

But life didn’t get easier.

It got harder.

I got divorced.

Suddenly, the life I had adapted to… shattered completely.

And just when I thought I’d already hit rock bottom, the ground slipped further.

I was heartbroken, ashamed, and terrified.

There were days I didn’t want to get up.

Days I questioned, “Why me?”

Why did my dreams have to come second? Why did my story turn into survival?

But you know what? That chapter… it broke me.

But it also started something.

A small fire. A shift.

A voice inside that said:

“You’re not done yet.”

And that… is where the next chapter begins.

So if you’ve ever felt stuck… lost… or hopeless—

If you’ve ever stared at your ceiling wondering where your life went—

Know this:

You’re not alone.

I see you. I was you.

This was just the beginning of my fall.

But it’s not the end of my story.

It’s just the start

It’s just the start to the new chapter of life
