This Week’s Topic: Self Doubt (#7)

Last Week’s Question

Is self-doubt a necessary component of personal growth, or does it merely hold one back from realizing one's full potential?

Feeling uncertain about starting a social media presence and blog is natural. However, I believe that growth requires taking risks and stepping outside of my comfort zone. Although I may face challenges, starting a blog and social media can connect me with like-minded people and allow me to share my unique perspective. By approaching these new ventures with an open mind and a willingness to learn, I can overcome my worries and reap the potential benefits.

Self-doubt is a feeling we all experience at some point in our lives. It's that nagging voice in the back of our heads that tells us we're not good enough or can't achieve our goals.

But why should we care about this feeling?

Self-doubt can hold us back from reaching our full potential and prevent us from living fulfilling lives. It can also lead to negative thoughts and behaviours, such as procrastination or self-sabotage.

How Stoicism can help

The Stoics believed that the key to a fulfilling life is to focus on what's within our control and to live in accordance with our own values and principles.

According to the Stoic philosopher Epictetus,

'It's not what happens to you, but how you react to it that matters.'

Similarly, Seneca wrote,

"It's not because things are difficult that we dare not venture.

It's because we dare not venture that they are difficult."

The Stoics remind us that our thoughts and reactions to situations are within our control and that we shouldn't let self-doubt hold us back from living a fulfilling life.

Stoicism 101: How to overcome self-doubt

The Stoics believed that the key to overcoming self-doubt is to detach ourselves from our thoughts and focus on what's within our control. This means focusing on our values and principles, and taking action towards our goals, even in the face of self-doubt.

The Stoics also believed in the power of self-reflection and introspection. By examining our thoughts and actions, we can identify the root cause of our self-doubt and work towards overcoming it.

In a nutshell

Self-doubt is an inevitable part of life, but it doesn't have to hold us back. By following the teachings of the Stoics and focusing on what's within our control, we can overcome self-doubt and live a fulfilling life.

Remember, Marcus Aurelius said:

'The best revenge is to be unlike him who performed the injury.'

Don't let self-doubt define you, be true to yourself and live the life you want.

Realistic steps to apply Stoic principles in real life

While the Stoic philosophy may seem abstract, there are several practical steps you can take to apply these principles in your daily life.
