Be willing to try

Don't be afraid of the beginning

I wonder how many times you’ve had an idea, nothing big, but you know that if you follow it through it will be just enough to keep the party going? It always sounds good in our head, but the prospects of the reality and the possible repercussion scare us.

Sometimes we just got to take a deep breath and go for it. My last article was about listening to the universe. This kind of ties in with that idea, because sometimes we just have to be willing to try, because when we don’t, we just regret not making that move or saying that thing.

Most people will say they are willing to try most things once and the problem we often measure success to big and sometime the wrong way. When we have idea, in our heads we imagine what it will come out as, imagine how people will react and when we don’t get the reaction or its not much as we expect it knock our confidence. The truth is that 98% of people will be accepting, will think you have done a good job, but it may only be 2% that you will get a physical reaction from. And it’s that 2% we measure our success against.

When we get out there and we try, there are three hard lessons we have to learn and accept. More people will buy into your idea without telling you, then those who actually give feedback immediately. Everyone will see what you are doing differently, they will process it differently. There are people like you before you tried, lack the confidence to say they liked it.

I’ve spoken about this before in previous articles, when starting a business some expect lots of people to come rushing through the door to support you. This is why I am not a fan of big chain stores, because this is the illusion they portray when they move into town.

That take me to my second lesson, time. Things take time, people process stuff differently and over different periods. If you open a new business whilst it will be supported by the whole community it may take some individuals time to work out if and how they can use the business.

The final lesson is legacy. Again, I have spoken about this before and I think its relevant as part of this article about being willing to try, because legacy is about the people’s lives, we touch, and this is something we will never know the full extent of in a lifetime. As mentioned already some people don’t react in the way we might expect, but you will still have touched their life in some way.

So if you are serious about an idea then get it out there, be willing to try. Like a writer, you can’t edit a blank page, its only when you have the idea out on the paper that you can actually start editing and making the work so much better. There is no real formula to success, though the basics is to plan, measure and understand when success happens.

The idea of me writing and publishing an article and recording a video every week was very overwhelming. The aim being to build a platform for my theatre business. But to be successful I have to keep reminding myself that it all takes time to build the audience, I just need to keep plodding on and keep producing material. It has taken several changes to get somewhere with it. But if I hadn’t have started then I would never be able to change things to make them better.

My journey with these articles has only just begun so there is no real way of knowing the impact as it is still too early. But I know I need to keep up what I’m doing for now and see what happens from there. I know there are things I need to do improve, but I also know that I can’t give the best right at the start as it will have nowhere to go in terms of improving.

So, when you have the dream just be willing to try, you never know where it might lead, you know it’s not going to be perfect at the beginning, but if you try at least you will get feedback on how to improve. This idea ties in with my article about master your craft, you may start as a novice, you may know very little, but you should always be working towards becoming the best at whatever it is you want to do. As well as find new ways of doing them, someone once said that you should not work to become the best, you should work to become the first. But you can only become the first if you are willing try first.
