We have all found ourselves in situations where we are forced to ask the question; What is the meaning of life? Why do we exist? What is our purpose? These are questions perennial and will forever exist. The answers to these questions I have always found most satisfactory in the work of Albert Camus. Albert Camus, a renowned philosopher and existentialist, attempts to answer the fundamental questions of human existence, particularly the concept of the absurdity of life. He explored this idea in his essay "The Myth of Sisyphus," where he employed the ancient Greek myth of Sisyphus to illustrate the inherent paradox of human existence.

The myth of Sisyphus tells the tale of a condemned man who is forced to roll a massive boulder up a hill for all eternity, only to see it roll back down just as he reaches the hilltop Camus saw in Sisyphus a profound metaphor for the human condition. To Camus, life itself is akin to Sisyphus's futile task, marked by a ceaseless cycle of meaningless actions and the absurdity of existence.

Camus contended that absurdity arises from the human desire to find meaning and purpose in a world that inherently lacks them. He argued that we are driven by a deep longing for significance and meaning, but the universe remains indifferent to our quest. This existential conflict, the clash between our longing for meaning and the apparent meaninglessness of the world, is the crux of the absurdity of life.

Camus famously declared that the only philosophical question worth addressing is whether one should choose to embrace life's absurdity or succumb to despair. He posited three possible responses to the absurd: philosophical suicide, physical suicide, and revolt.

Philosophical Suicide/Leap of Faith: This response involves escaping the absurd by embracing a system of belief or ideology that provides a comforting and artificial sense of meaning. For Camus, this was a cowardly evasion of the truth and a denial of one's freedom to confront the absurd head-on.

Physical Suicide: This response is the most extreme and tragic, where individuals, unable to bear the weight of the absurd, choose to end their lives. Camus acknowledged the despair that can lead to such a decision but argued that it was also an evasion of the central question of existence.

Revolt: Camus advocated for the third response, which he saw as the only authentic way to live in the face of the absurd. Revolt involves embracing the absurdity of life while simultaneously asserting one's existence and freedom. Sisyphus, in continuing to push the boulder despite its futility, embodies this spirit of rebellion against the meaninglessness of existence.

In conclusion, life is inherently absurd because it lacks inherent meaning, and our struggle to find meaning in the face of this absurdity defines the human condition. With the short story on the Myth of Sisyphus, we are made to know that life is an endless cycle of Absurdity that can not be understood. This sometimes can be depressing as no matter what you do, you can not escape the cycle. In line with the possible escapes provided by Albert Camus, some embrace ideologies that help provide comfort to them, while some attempt to end their life, both ways involving a surrender to Absurdity.

This is to encourage us to confront the absurdity of life with courage, to revolt against it, and to find our meaning and purpose in the act of living itself. In doing so, we can live happier. Resilience in whatever field or situation one is in is the key to making meaning out of the meaningless. Never give up.
