All of us find ourselves stuck in a rut at some point in our lives. Sometimes, there’s a reason behind our bad moods–a problem at work, a fight with a friend, or even something as simple as making a mistake playing a video game can have us feeling down. At other times, we can’t express why we’re feeling low. It can be anything from general stress to simply waking woken up on the wrong side of the bed–the only thing we know is that we’re in a terrible mood. No matter what the reason, all of us need a pick-me-up at some point in our lives.

The sun is up, the sky is blue and it's time to focus on your well-being.

1. Go On A Nature Walk

Studies show that even a short walk in nature can help you boost serotonin and dopamine production and lower cortisol levels—the hormone associated with stress and depression . Furthermore, go into any corner of the world and you will see different shades of green that are pleasing to the eye and can lower anxiety levels.

2. Indulge In A Relaxing Activity

From coloring books to adult coloring books, from aromatherapy to journaling, from knitting to crocheting, there are countless activities you can do to help you relax. The important thing is to find one that works for you and stick with it.

3. Connect With Friends And Family

This one is a no-brainer, but it’s worth mentioning. Spending time with friends and family can help improve your mood, especially if you’re feeling down. Laughing and talking are both great cures for the blues.

4. Play With A Pet

Pets provide us with companionship, love, and laughter, all of which can improve our moods. Playing with a pet not only helps to brighten your day but can also be great exercise.

5. Exercise

This one might seem like a bit of a pain, but it’s actually quite soothing. Plus, it can help you stay healthy and fit.

The simple act of exercise stimulates endorphins that elevate your mood by making you happier and less stressed. So go ahead, hit the gym or go for a run! If workouts are not your thing, try something else like swimming, dancing, martial arts or yoga.

6. Engage Your Senses

The simple things in life can bring you a lot of joy. Try to appreciate the little things around you, like the taste of your favorite food or the sound of birds singing outside your window. You can also try lighting candles or incense, snuggling up with a blanket and watching a nice movie, playing some music, taking a bath , or even drawing to help you feel better.

7. Do Things You Enjoy

Doing the things that make us happy is one of the sure-fire ways to lift our spirits! So if there’s something that makes you smile, do it as often as you can. It could be playing video games, binge-watching your favorite TV show, going out to eat, or simply hanging out with friends.

Everyone experiences low moods from time to time, but by using one or more of these activities, you can help brighten your day and improve your mood.

While these tips may not be able to solve emergencies you’re facing or solve all your concerns, they can help brighten your mood and make you feel more energized. Keep in mind, of course, that I don’t pretend that these can work as a replacement for professional help if you need it–only as supplementary activities to help bring a smile to your face and lighten the load a little.

No matter what you do, make sure it brings you joy and try to do it every day! These five activities should help get you started. Happy mood-boosting!
