From breakouts to the flu, your phone can be the cause of a lot of health problems you'd never expect.

Do you remember getting your first cellphone as a teenager? I know I sure as hell do. This was back in the day when smartphones didn't exist, so I ended up using it just like a regular phone.

Oh, how I'd talk! I would press it up to my ear and chat the day away with my besties. Everything I enjoyed involved me talking to my friends on the phone. Life couldn't be better, because I now had a cellphone for the first time in my life.

Then, the acne started.

For the first time ever, I started to have breakouts. The strange thing was that it only appeared on one side of my face—the side of my face that my phone rested on.

It was then I realized that my phone's face was the cause of my acne! More specifically, it was the dirt, bacteria, and grime on it was causing my phone to give me breakouts.

Ever since then, I realized how gross phones can get. Thankfully, there are ways to help reduce the germs they carry. If you aren't sure why you need to keep your phone clean, this article will explain it all.

Germs spread via several different routes: moisture, air, and touch. The more we touch something, the more bacteria will spread to it—especially if we don't wipe our hands or faces when we touch them.

Think about all the different places your hands have been. You may have answered your phone after taking out the trash, petting a dog, or even changing a diaper without washing your hands. All the bacteria from those places may still be stuck on your phone.

Because we press our phones up against our faces, the spread of bacteria can be way worse for your health than you'd think.

Another fact you need to remember about bacteria transmission is that proximity matters. The closer you put a germ-covered item to your face, the easier it is for those germs to get transmitted to you and get you sick.

Your phone gets placed directly on your face, right near your mouth and nose. That's about as close as you can get! To make matters worse, your hands touch your phone and might end up in your mouth.

Both methods of transmission can cause you to get sick. It's not unheard of to witness people get breakouts due to excessive phone use.

If you had to lift up a toilet seat, would you want to wash your hands? Moreover, don't you regularly clean your toilet seats at home? Toilet seats are notoriously dirty, which is why they get the cleaning treatment they do on a regular basis.

Time recently showed that your cellphone is about 10 times dirtier than a toilet seat. The reason why is simple: We neglect to clean our phones, which allows for more buildup to occur.

Prior to newer tech advances, doctors and tech gurus would suggest getting a disinfecting wipe and gently patting your phone down. This would reduce the germs that survive on your phone, but there were definitely issues with this cleaning method.

The problem with cleaning cellphones the old fashioned way is that you might damage them.

With most items, cleaning means that you will need to wash something down with a little bit of water or by spritzing things down with a cleaning spray.

As just about everyone knows, cellphones aren't waterproof. In fact, some unlucky people have had broken LCD screens worsen after an errant splash of water.

There have been some cases where moisture from a disinfecting wipe traveled into the phone and harmed electronics inside. So, this method of cleaning really isn't good for your device.

This method wasn't totally effective, either.

Moreover, since you can only blot a disinfecting wipe on your phone, there's a good chance that you will miss certain parts of your phone and consequently trap germs on the device.

This means that even with your disinfecting wipes, there is still a chance that you could have a breakout (or illness) occur due to a lack of proper cleaning.

It's called PhoneSoap, and contrary to what its name suggests, there's no actual soap involved. PhoneSoap is a product that uses UV-C radiation to destroy 99.9 percent of all the bacteria on your phone without soap or water.

UV-C radiation has been scientifically proven to kill germs. Just place your phone in the case, turn on PhoneSoap, and wait. Your phone will be clean as a whistle once it's out.

If you're anything like me, you don't want to have to wait 10 minutes without your phone—at least, if it's not charging. That's what makes PhoneSoap so neat.

Thanks to a small opening in the case, you can charge your phone while you let it clean. Let's say you're waiting on a call or want to hear some music, too, PhoneSoap's built-in amplifiers will make sure that you don't miss out on anything coming from your speakers. You can even wirelessly charge and clean your phone with PhoneSoap Wireless.

There's a PhoneSoap for every phone out there.

PhoneSoap is pretty awesome when it comes to creating charging stations that suit every tech user's needs. These devices work well with just about every major smartphone model you could have, including models that work through wireless Qi chargers.

From personal experience, I can also tell you that PhoneSoap doesn't just work with phones. I've also disinfected my credit cards using these devices as well.

Of course, you can also wipe off grease from your fingers using PhoneSoap's microfiber cloth.

It's worth pointing out that grease and germs are not the same thing. If you recently grabbed something greasy and now have smears on your phone's face, you will still need to wipe those grease stains away.

Every PhoneSoap device comes with microfiber cloths that help remove pesky smudges from your phone. This leaves your phone looking neat and tidy, while also being germ-free. However, I recommend grabbing the microfiber cloth before the phone to get those greasy fingers clean before fiddling with your phone.

Once you start cleaning your phone the right way, you'll notice a change immediately.

Since I started using PhoneSoap, I noticed a marked decrease in my breakouts. Others who have started cleaning off their phones have claimed to notice fewer sick days being tallied up at the office and spent in bed.

The fact is, getting bacteria to go bye-bye should be a priority for you, especially if you have a tendency of getting sick easily. The sooner you get PhoneSoap, the better your bill of health will be.
