What is a Weight Loss Supplement?

A weight loss supplement is a product that you take to either speed up your metabolism, increase fat burning, or reduce hunger and cravings, thereby helping you lose weight. Supplements can be in the form of pills, powders, or bars, and many of them also contain ingredients that are meant to improve your wellbeing, such as vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Weight-loss supplements include appetite suppressants (which can help you eat less and control hunger and cravings), thermogenics (which boost your metabolism and increase the rate at which your body burns fat), fat-blocking supplements, and metabolic boosters.

How do Supplements Help You Lose Weight?

Appetite suppressants - Appetite suppressants, such as hydroxycitric acid (HCA), work by increasing serotonin levels in the brain. Serotonin is a hormone that suppresses appetite, so when it is increased, you feel less hungry and therefore eat less. These types of supplements are great for people who have trouble controlling their food cravings. Thermogenics - Thermogenics, such as caffeine and green tea extract, help your body burn more calories. They do this by increasing your metabolism and making your body burn calories at a higher rate. For example, green tea extract contains compounds called catechins, which are known for increasing metabolism, burning fat, and boosting fat oxidation. Fat-blocking supplements - Fat-blocking supplements, such as Garcinia Cambogia, inhibit the body’s ability to break down fat. They do this by blocking the enzyme responsible for breaking down fat cells, called citrate lyase. When this enzyme is blocked, fat can’t be broken down and instead is excreted from the body in the form of waste. Metabolic boosters - Metabolic boosters, such as coleus forskohlii, increase your metabolic rate and help your body burn more calories. These types of supplements work by boosting the body’s production of norepinephrine and epinephrine, which are hormones that increase metabolism and help your body burn more calories.

Which Supplements are Actually Effective for Weight Loss?

Appetite suppressants - Appetite suppressants, such as HCA, are known for effectively helping people lose weight. Studies have shown that HCA helps people eat less and lose weight in a variety of ways, including boosting serotonin levels and increasing the feeling of fullness. Thermogenics - While many people think that caffeine and green tea extract are great for weight loss, studies show that they aren’t as effective as some people may think. For example, one study found that caffeine supplements don’t appear to boost metabolism or help with weight loss. Another study suggests that the caffeine in green tea extract might actually prevent weight loss. Fat-blocking supplements - While Garcinia Cambogia is popularly believed to help with weight loss, there is no evidence to suggest that it actually works. However, some people report that it does help with weight loss, but it is unclear what effects it has on fat loss. Metabolic boosters - There are many different types of metabolic boosters, but few are actually effective for weight loss. One of the most popular metabolic boosters is coleus forskohlii. Studies show that coleus forskohlii is effective for increasing metabolism and helping people lose weight.

Which Supplements are a Waste of Money?

Appetite suppressants - Appetite suppressants are one of the most common and popular types of weight-loss supplements. However, many studies show that they don’t actually help people lose weight. One study found that people who took an appetite suppressant lost as much weight as people who didn’t take the supplement. Thermogenics - Many people think that caffeine is a great weight-loss supplement, but studies suggest that it isn’t as effective as some people think. While caffeine does increase metabolism, it is unclear whether this actually helps with weight loss. Fat-blocking supplements - There is no evidence to suggest that Garcinia Cambogia helps with weight loss or fat loss. In fact, many studies suggest that it doesn’t work at all. Metabolic boosters - Although many metabolic boosters are effective for boosting metabolism, few of them are actually effective for weight loss. One study found that there was no significant difference between people who took a metabolic booster and people who didn’t.

Bottom Line

Weight-loss supplements do work, but not all of them work. Bottom line, you can’t just take a supplement without doing anything else and expect to lose weight. Supplements are meant to help supplement a healthy diet and exercise routine. If you want to lose weight, you’ll need to follow a healthy diet, exercise regularly, and take weight-loss supplements. However, supplements are not meant to replace healthy eating and exercising. You’ll need to follow a healthy diet and exercise regularly to achieve your weight-loss goals. With that said, weight-loss supplements could help you achieve your goals faster by helping you get there quicker.
