Reading for 2-3 thru 2-9-20

The Center card for this week is the Hanged Man.

The energy of the Hanged Man allows us to see things in a completely different way. In the card a man is shown hanging upside down by one foot. He symbolizes times when the world as we know it gets turned upside down. From this change in viewpoint it’s likely we feel out of place, out of touch or knocked for a loop by what we can see that’s been hidden until now. Although the position of being flipped upside down is uncomfortable and unfamiliar, from this perspective we can see the undersides and back sides of things. From here we can see the back channels and undercurrents that thrive while we’re focused on those “normal” things we’ve grown accustomed to. In having the chance now to look at bits of our lives that have perhaps gotten away from us or taken on a trajectory of their own, we’re being given the chance to approach them differently. Whether it’s a project that, in allowing it to grow at its own rate, has thrived far more than we thought it would or something we’ve been putting off because we don’t want to look at it. Health concerns? Money issues? Silent spots in relationships? There is a drive now to look past the surface and deep into the internal workings and underpinnings.

The West card is the Knight of Cups.

Because this Knight has come up in the spread, my sense is that the area in life that’s been flipped to show it’s rarely seen and very tender underbelly is the realm of emotional connection. Okay, yes, that was a fancy way of saying personal relationships. This knight is confident and strong, able to stay in touch with his feelings even under stressful conditions. The flip side, however, is his tendency toward emotional confusion or withdrawal as a result of his ability to feel his emotions acutely. So, a couple of questions to ask yourself; “Have my emotions (fear, self-doubt, unrealistic desire) been blinding me to undercurrents in relationship?” “Has my anger hidden my finer qualities of love and compassion?” “Has a need to control stifled healthy growth?” It looks like emotions this week come up to recognized but not in an out-of-control way. Deep feelings may be just the splash needed to get things freed up and moving.

The East card is Death.

This placement is fortuitous in that the Hanged Man directly precedes the Death card in the Major Arcana. In the upside down suspension of changed perspective, while compelled to look at things that are so often kept below the surface or off to the side, we get a chance to see what’s working and what isn’t and we can then mitigate our feelings and actions with a clearer understanding of what’s needed. When we’re pushed by an unexpected change in perception it often becomes abundantly clear what we want to have in our lives and what we would choose to do without. The Death card is about release. The release of those things that no longer serve us in a life affirming way. I’ve used a few examples of this necessary transition phase but when we think of what needs to change in order for us to thrive that’s what this card asks us to recognize. When a snake grows too big for its skin it sheds it to allow the new, fresh, supple, young skin to live freely. The “rebirth” of the snake is evident. This concept doesn’t just work in a linear way, it works in many ways and dimensions. When we think of death we often think of final endings and it does signal finality for some things but that covers only the loss of what has ceased to sustain life. The Death card asks us to contemplate the final release of things that have had an impact on our lives but it also encourages us to look at the new cycle that has begun when that release occurs. In order for the butterfly to live the caterpillar must cease to exist.

In conclusion;

Emotions may run high and deep this week but we’ll also be strong and confident in those feelings, willing to see them to the end and more likely to stick to our guns than be pulled off course by scenarios or manipulative intent running in the background. In having our viewpoint unexpectedly shifted we’re able to see more clearly what’s going on in our lives and make some decisions about what we want to keep and what we want to throw away. All loss triggers a grieving period but that doesn’t necessarily mean that there must be tears or heartache as a part of the process. If we discover that by letting go of a controlling nature our projects thrive, the “grieving” process to honor the release of a personality trait that kept us from succeeding can be one of joy and celebration. Trust your emotions this week, if your mind says one thing and your heart says another, go with the heart.

Have a clear and liberating week.

Light, Tory

TIP for the week: Don’t yell at your kids. Lean in close and whisper, it’s much scarier.
