Today as I shuffled the cards Death popped out as a jumper and then while I continued to shuffle, pondering the fact that this particular card jumped, the other two jumped as well so our trio for the week are all jumpers.

The Center card for the week is Death.

Given that we’re now entering the first full week of 2020 the Death card seems appropriate. With this card we look at what no longer “lives” for us. This can represent a job, relationship, ideal, habit or simply the year, and in this case decade, which has passed. Whatever the changes we face, acknowledging feelings of loss or grief that come up is important. Losing something that has been an integral part of ourselves whether it was joyous, challenging, enlightening or devastating, still leaves a gap that we feel, often intensely, in the person we are today. It is significant, natural and sometimes even necessary, to allow ourselves to honor the grieving process. The Death card is shown in many many cases as the reaper and in my opinion that’s to show us that death does not mean complete loss or “nothing”. From the shift, the change, the loss we inevitably gain something. Whether it’s the freedom of stepping away from a stressful job or the chance to find the strength we need in ourselves instead of being controlled by others, getting out from under a mortgage we simply can’t afford (even if we really wanted to keep the house) or release from the chains of a bad situation there is always the gain of new experiences, challenges and perspectives. The comparison of the transformation from caterpillar to butterfly shows this well. The butterfly endures a difficult and complete transformation and is then able to literally fly. The caterpillar however must die in order for the change to happen.

The West card is the High Priestess.

The Priestess card represents the Intricate, interconnected matrix that forms the relationship between us and the Universe, from the vast, unknowable infinity of space to the tiniest quark. So far, we humans know the most common elements that make up the Universe; hydrogen, oxygen, carbon and nitrogen also comprise all life on Earth. We are part of the Universe and we are composed of the exact same elements. The Universe is part of us. Inject into that our consciousness, our ability to think, and we find one of the great mysteries humans have been contemplating since we could wonder. Why the stars, clouds, earth, oceans and animals are as they are and what is our purpose in this great interplay? The High Priestess embodies the knowing that beyond our common, everyday experience there must be more. She compels us to reacquaint ourselves with the macrocosm we live in and to expand our understanding of that connection. She is the mystery we know is there and that we yearn to know more about.

The East card is the Prince of Wands.

I see the princes as the adolescent boys of the Tarot. In looking at the trajectory of each suit the actual experience and implementation of the traits begins to show in the court cards as they travel the path of their suit gaining knowledge and experience. The princesses, the youngsters, step up in their innocence and say “show me!” Then the princes go forward from there having gained the beginnings of an understanding of the power and traits of their suit. And just as teenaged boys will do, think they know enough to plow right on ahead leaving those of us with a bit more experience standing in their dust yelling, “ you forgot your helmet!” The beauty of this rather reckless confidence is that there are times when the young man will hit a wall, learn where the boundary is and come back for the helmet, BUT there are also times when he will pass right through whatever obstacle he comes upon like it was never there to begin with. In this way the fiery creativity of the Wands may show us that all is not what has been learned but what we imagine can be pushed, expanded and grown.

In conclusion;

This first week of the new decade is a perfect time to reflect on what bits of us have died, what we’ve let go and allow ourselves to be sad, or whatever emotions come up, to grieve the loss of what was once familiar even if it wasn’t life affirming. Even when our situations improve drastically, hard things leave gaps too. Habits, situations or relationships we could still shed on our way to transformation from flightless caterpillar to brilliant moth deserve a close look too as we face the new year. In contemplating the release of things that have died, -things that have become baggage instead of support, complications that hinder or weigh down progress,- realizations about the bigger picture and our place in the macrocosm of life in the Universe will likely emerge. With her connection to the mysteries of life the Priestess shows up in our thinking as we seek knowledge about who and why we really are. As we take our, sometimes limited, experience in hand to dive into the year we carry with us the fiery spirit of creativity that allows us to ignite the detritus of obstacles in our way and blaze a new trail.

Have a liberating week.
