Like Water Over a Bridge

My Feelings on How the World Views Special Needs

"Like water under a bridge." A quote we all know. One you may have used to apologize or accept one. One you may have learned early on and may have just learned. It's just an ordinary everyday thing.

Have you ever stuck your hand in a water stream? You can feel the water flow between your fingers. But when you put your hands together, it becomes a barrier. The water crashes hard against your hands and you create a little wave.

You know what no one expects to see? Water over a bridge. I mean really, if I saw that I'd probably stop and admire and send out a tweet or a snap, as would many. What would I call this phenomenon? Let me think.

Well, for one thing, A mysterious one of God's creations. And probably amazing. But I’d also think... How? And how strange. And how'd it get to be like this? I might start to think my eyes are tricking me and something like THIS can't possibly exist. I’d start to doubt.

Well, I see to many people looking at others like water under bridges. Special needs kids at our schools are treated like this too. But many people ask questions instead of admiring their beauty. They start to doubt themselves and the kids.

To often people look and think, how? How are they so stupid? How are they so ugly and…. How they are? What's causing the to be this way? What cause them to become this way?

These are things I've heard my peers say. And unfortunately, no matter how many times I point it out, it continues. And those same people break down just from someone saying something mean to them. But they don't realize that's what they're doing to the special needs kids in our schools.

To often I see people saying, why are they so strange? What's happened to their face? Why do they need that machine?

Really, we all need a machine. That machine is our brain, but people with special needs, their machine just had a few broken parts. Unfortunately in most cases those parts can't be fixed. And most people look at that and can't accept it, because in today's world if something is broken, there examined to see whats wrong then set aside or thrown away

I've heard to many people ask, What's going on with their face? Why are they looking at me like that? Why are they scared of me and why are they not? Why do they do that weird thing?

I've seen too many people shove their hands into water. They don't gently put their hand in to feel the wave. They splash in the water. And when they learn to gently put their hand in, they become barriers. We need to stop being a problem and become a solution.

How do we become a solution?

We turn those why's into a because. We need to stop doubting our eyes and others. We need to not be so fast to react and just admire and make a beautiful picture.

We need to learn to separate our hands and let the water flow through. We need to make them feel like one of us, and not just some broken shoved aside toy. Were all a little broken anyway, the only difference is that theirs is more visible.

Maybe we could even connect with the water. But it's not going to happen with only one person, so here I am putting this out. We need to change get this, me and you, opening one hand at a time.
