How Do Fillers Work?

Fillers (aka dermal fillers and soft tissues) are one of the most popular beauty treatments out there. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), they (surprisingly) made it the 5 most popular weight loss procedures for 2018, receiving 2,676,970 total treatments per year. So, they are the hottest topic in the world of aesthetics! If you are not sure what to fill, I will give you a quick finish.

What are dermal fillers?

As we grow older, our skin loses essential oils and proteins - such as collagen and elastin - which provide facial make-up and make it look younger, fat, and bouncy. But, fortunately, there is a treatment that can help with this. Welcome, skin filling.

These anti-aging injections can help restore the appearance of youth as the skin begins to age smoothly with wrinkles, as well as help to change the structure - and add meaning - to facial features. Dermal filler injections - commonly referred to as fillers - can also give volume to sunken areas (such as the cheeks), fix under-eye bags and improve areas such as cups, jawlines, chambers and temples. They can be used for nasal reconstruction, called liquid rhinoplasty (check out our soft liquid FAQs for more details!).

Therefore, they can be used to treat a variety of problem areas, but how do they fill them? That is a question that is on the lips of many people, so let's find out. Spoiler: very simple.

How do fillers work?

Skin filling treatments include a gel-like (natural or synthetic) substance injected into the target areas with a cannula or needle. The filler soothes the skin internally and works to replace lost fats and proteins in smooth and wrinkled lines and rejuvenates dull areas (hello, filters that fill the cheeks!).

Note: fillers used in vertical lines, unlike flexible lines, are always visible on the surface even if it is loose and unobtrusive. Dynamic lines are well treated with Botox.

There are many types of dermal fillers (some temporary, some long lasting, some small, some thick), including calcium hydroxyapatite, polymethylmethacrylate and hyaluronic acid. Other semi-permanent fillers - including Sculptra, Ellanse and Radiesse - work not only by filling in lines and wrinkles, but also by stimulating the body's production of collagen. However, hyaluronic acid fillers - which include products such as Juvéderm, Belotero and Restylane - are the most popular and widely used. A naturally occurring component of the body, hyaluronic acid is a valuable hydraulic skin care ingredient. This type of filling is popular for many reasons, but the biggest one is that it is temporary (lasting about 6-18 months, depending on the product and the injection site). Dermal filling rates and sizes

Depending on the treatment area, and the desired effect, different doses will be applied to the skin. Prices range from a 0.5ml filling to 5ml filling with your doctor (if it fits well!) You will know the best amount you can use for the intended purposes. With deep wrinkles, more filling will need to be injected and in the top row, less filling will be required. The same applies to lip filling; the more filling it will give the bigger and smaller the output, the more subtle filling will give the natural abundance.

But it is not just the amount of filling involved. It also has to do with the intensity of the injection used - or the viscosity, if we feel we have the technology! Also, depending on the surface area treated, a different filling consistency will work better. To improve the cheeks, for example, a large, heavy workload reaches work - something like Juvéderm Voluma - because it gives more texture. However, areas such as the mouth and lips will only require a small, low-energy filling - like Juvéderm Volbella.

How long does a facial expression last?

Depending on how your body reacts and which hyaluronic acid is used, most face masks will last between six and 18 months.
