What Is Saltwater Flush?

Saltwater flush is an ancient yogic method of cleansing and detoxing the whole gut (small and large intestine), thereby enhancing bowel movement. The main function is to balance the body electrolytes as well as restoring the body's minerals. It is believed to remove toxins, heavy metals, dead parasitic cells and some old waste build-up in the colon, although the belief that it removes toxin has not been scientifically proven.

However, it is proved to clear gut debris prior to colonoscopy therapy.

Saltwater flush is another form of colon cleansing or colonoscopy.

Who Should Benefit From Saltwater Flush?

Although it is an ancient yogic bowel and intestine cleanse, it is recommended only for chronic constipation and adults with irregular bowel movement. This is because it works within thirty minutes to one hour of taking the solution. It works best on an empty stomach.

It is best to devout one day and try to remain indoors on the day, as you will need to visit the toilet often as needed.

What You Need For Saltwater Flush

  • Clean water - can be spring, filtered or boiled and cooled (not hot but lukewarm). About 500 MLS.
  • Two teaspoons of sea salt, (or Himalayan, Celtic or Icelandic).
  • A drop or two of lemon juice/apple cider vinegar - this is just to improve on the taste.

Mix very well, and drink straight on an empty stomach. Abstain from eating until you have had a bowel movement, although you can continue to drink water if you are thirsty or feel dehydrated.

It is important to build up the gut microbiome after the hot water flush, especially with nutrition-dense foods and prebiotics. Natural yoghurt is good as well.

Risks And Precaution

  • Some people experience nausea or vomiting, bloating and or stomach cramp.
  • Sodium intoxication from the salt may result in high blood pressure for those at risk.
  • It may result in electrolyte imbalance in the gut due to the loss of gut contents(old faecal poo). It is best to then ensure plenty of water and later prebiotics is taken to restore the gut bacterium.
  • Muscle spasms may occur due to a rapid loss of fluid.
  • Irregular heartbeat - can result from the electrolyte imbalance created by the saltwater flush. Electrolytes balance is the abnormality in the concentration of vitamins, minerals etc in the body that affects the PH balance. This can occur due to the loss of fluid in the body.
  • Blood pressure issue - the excess salt can result in high blood pressure for those at risk.

Those Who Should Stay Away From Saltwater Flush

People with the following medical commodities are not advised to use saltwater flush therapy:

  • High blood Pressure - the excess salt can cause havoc to already bad situation.
  • Kidney diseases - The kidney eliminates the excess salt but will need water to do so. If your kidney does function properly, then please keep away from this.
  • Gastrointestinal issues like IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), ulcer etc.
  • Oedema - is water retention in the body that usually shows up as swollen legs and ankles.
  • Diabetic - the high salt can contribute to the already existing diabetic problem.
  • Pregnant and lactating women for the obvious reason of affecting their babies.

Natural Alternatives To Saltwater Flush

This is by ensuring you eat nutrition-dense foods like fruits and vegetables. These are high in water content, apart from their micronutrients contents. Drink plenty of water, and ensure your gut microbiome is healthy. You can enhance this by taking prebiotics regularly.

All the above, and of course those normal day-to-day activities, like regular exercise, adequate sleep, healthy eating, not smoking, and a dose of sunshine all add up to a healthy gut.

Saltwater Flush And Weight Loss

It is generally believed that because salt water flush helps in digestion and bowel movement, it should support weight loss, but this is not proven. There are many things that support gradual weight loss, and it differs from one person to another. According to a naturopathist dietician,

"For starters, the body mechanics are quite simple: downing a couple of big glasses of warm salt water creates muscle contractions in the digestive system that move everything out, top to bottom. You activate your body's own ability to cleanse itself from the inside out. It has to be the most effective and efficient ways of cleaning your entire digestive system and best of all, it is natural. The salt in the water matches your body's saliency so the water doesn't actually get absorbed. In other words, it's a true flush." Laveena Vazirani

Saltwater flush only benefits people with a poor diet generally because they are most affected by the accumulation of toxin and heavy metal waste in their digestive tract. This results in their poor and irregular bowel movement.

Saltwater flush is not proven to contribute to long term weight loss.

Why Do We Need To Detox? - The Final Thoughts

  • Saltwater flush is a form of detox of the gut from supposed toxin, faecal debris and other food build up in the gut, that can cause illnesses in the long run, if not forced out.
  • Although some people argue that the body can eliminate waste by itself, and does not need our help to do this, other than feeding it with nutrition-dense foods and drinks.
  • This is true in a way because living healthily is still the number one reason for maintaining good and sound health in body, mind and spirit.
  • We should then combine living healthily with a mindful and cautious lifestyle to ensure we minimise (difficult to eliminate in today's living) toxins both from our environment and our food.
  • Eat organic and non-GMO foods, like the Medittarean diet, get enough quality sleep, reduce stressors, free your mind from unnecessary worries, as all these have a direct effect on your gut health.
  • The body detoxes and eliminates wastes naturally through the skin, kidney, sweat and bowel movement. Treat the body well, and allow it to do the work perfectly.
  • Maintain a healthy weight, as obesity-related illnesses can affect gut health too.
