Pregnancy is excellent, but the rewards don’t come without some sacrifice.

Many women find themselves with trouble getting back into shape after having twins, either because of extra weight from pregnancy or spare time to take care of two babies instead of one.

But getting back into shape after having twins doesn’t have to be complicated, and it doesn’t mean eating less or giving up your favorite foods forever; you need to make a few small changes to your diet and fitness routine.

Exercise in moderation

If you’re used to being physically active and then getting pregnant, it can be tough to figure out how to get back into shape once your bundle of joy arrives.

You’ll need to balance being realistic and not doing anything that may cause harm.

Before beginning any exercise routine, speak with your doctor, including light jogging or walking.

Start slow and build strength over time, rather than jumping right into intense workouts.

Eat nutrient-rich foods

Eating a healthy diet is key when you’re trying to lose weight. And eating plenty of nutritious foods is especially important after having twins.

A balanced, low-fat diet rich in vitamins and minerals will help support you and your little ones through your postpartum period.

Avoid high-calorie, processed foods that can easily lead to weight gain; instead, opt for lean meats, fruits and vegetables, legumes, whole grains, and dairy products.

Be patient

Don’t try to force your body into changing too quickly.

Remember, weight loss is a marathon, not a sprint. Be realistic about what you can and cannot do so that when you’re ready to challenge yourself with more intense workouts, you know that they will be effective.

If you’re getting back into exercise after time off (like after having children), don’t try to tackle everything at once.

Build up your endurance and make sure that your form is good before moving on to new activities.

And finally, most notably: Don’t forget to take care of yourself throughout it all! Make sleep a priority and do whatever it takes to find time for regular exercise.

Focus on recovery

Let’s face it: you had a baby. So if your goal is to lose weight after having twins, it’s smart to focus on recovery first.

Take time to rest, eat well and fuel up for sleep—this will help you lose weight safely after pregnancy.

But don’t stress about your weight: there will be plenty of time to slim down as you get back into shape after giving birth!

It’s also important to pay attention to your body: if you find that certain foods make you feel nauseous or cause other symptoms, avoid them while you recover from childbirth. And finally, remember that everybody bounces back differently after birth—some women can drop pounds right away while others need more time.

It all depends on how much weight was gained during pregnancy and how quickly your body returns to its pre-pregnancy state.

Don’t compare yourself to others.

Comparing yourself to others only leads to discouragement, demotivation, and jealousy.

Whether you’re a new mom or have a significant amount of weight to lose, set realistic goals and don’t compare yourself to your sister, who seems back in shape just two weeks after birth.

It can be challenging to overcome these feelings, but remember that everybody is different.

You may not be able to get back into shape as quickly as she did because of your age, genetics, lifestyle choices (including diet), injuries, etc.

Keep in mind that it took nine months for you to gain all that weight—it will take at least that long for it all to come off again!

Have realistic expectations

While it’s tempting to see losing weight after multiple pregnancies as simply a math problem—I gained 50 pounds, now I need to lose 50 pounds—don’t think of it that way.

Expecting your body to bounce back is setting yourself up for failure. Instead, shift your thinking: Your body went through nine months of changing, growing, and adapting to its new environment (and two lives inside), so give it time.
