Coconuts are classified as single-seed tropical drupe that grows primarily in tropical regions. When young, there is a delicious and refreshing fluid known as "Coconut Water", and a think film of flesh called "Jelly". Together it is a treat to anyone consuming this young coconut.
This article is focused more on the benefits of a mature coconut. If the young green coconuts are allowed to ripen on the tree or off, most of the water is absorbed and the jelly thickens into a white thick fleshy endodermal layer. If you burst the hard protective shell and remove the white flesh, then you have a natural gold everyone has access to.
Beneficial form of the coconut
In order to access the benefits of the coconut, the thick fleshy part of the coconut extract used in 3 ways:
- Consumed whole
- Grated, saturated with water, and squeezed for the milk
- Grated and allowed to dry for the oil.
No matter how coconut is consumed the benefits are the same.
5 benefits of coconut you probably did not know
Coconut has numerous benefits and to the natives of countries and islands of the Tropics, it is even more important. But are researches that lately begun proving coconut is even more beneficial than persons originally assumed. Here are 5 unexpected benefits of coconut you might now know:
1. Coconut helps to improve cognitive function.
The first time I heard of this was from a Family Medicine doctor I was rotating with. But only today on Alzheimers.net the author Ann Napoletan published an article on coconut oil and Alzheimer prevention. In it, she reported that Dr. Newport declared that her husband had signs of improvement in his dementia with regular use of coconut oil.
What's more, is that a University of Oxford study also proves that coconut oil upon regular use showed temporary improvement in Alzheimer and Dementia symptoms.
Scientists are crediting this benefit to the high ketone content of coconut oil. Ketones provide a rich source of energy for brain cells reducing cell fatigue and damage.
2. Coconut oil has antibacterial properties
Coconut oil is composed of many different fatty acids. But Lauric acid in particular has shown the ability to fight bacteria and prevent its growth. A few of these bacteria include H. pylori, E. coli, and even Staphylococcus aureus.
Apply fresh virgin coconut oil will not only hydrate the skin, but it provides antibacterial protection every time. And BTW if you add coconut oil to the hair the same antibacterial protection is extended here too.
3. Maintains a rich and healthy source of Energy
It may sound funny, but yes, chewing on a few pieces of coconut when you are hungry or just feel drained can get you back at 100% energy. Coconut has a rich content in sugars, fatty acids, and protein makes it a superfood. In my opinion, it is the single whole healthiest food on the planet, packed with fiber and electrolytes to satisfy the hunger craving.
4. Super growth formula for the hair
Do you have trouble with growing your hair? Or is it falling and you don't know why? Coconut oil helps with both. There are many hair products with coconut oil as the main ingredient, but nothing beats the pure organic source.
Yes, there is a big difference between using a processed brand and an organic source.
How can you grow your hair with coconut oil? It is quite simple to obtain pure coconut oil. Get the dried coconut, burst the shell and remove the flesh. Grate or blend it, squeeze out the milk which you boil. Instead of boiling to extract the oil, I would sometimes saturate my hair with the thick creme from the coconut. This is before, wash day.
You can try it and let me know how it worked for you. Please note though, your hair might smell a bit rancid on the second day, but it is worth it.
5. It protects the heart
There was 1 oil my Family med doctor I rotated with, recommended for all his patients, young to old, Coconut Oil. According to him, use it in everything, bake, fry, cook, on your skin, and even sip a little. But please remember everything in moderation.
The fact is that coconut oil doesn't change its chemical consistency after heating, which is significant because it is less likely to form layers within blood vessels and calcify. There is more research to be done on this oil but it is an excellent oil for persons with cardiovascular problems.
There is lots more that coconut oil does for the body. Look out for the next post on great coconut oil products for the body.
