The king raised an eyebrow. "What kind of joke?"

As the sun rose on the first of April, the court jester donned his colorful outfit and prepared for his day of mischief. For years, he had been the king's trusted fool, entertaining the court with his jokes and tricks. But this year, he had a special plan in mind.

As the king and his courtiers gathered in the great hall for their morning meeting, the jester stood at the back, trying to keep a straight face as he listened to the king's plans for the day. When the king finally dismissed his council, the jester stepped forward.

"Your Majesty," he said, bowing deeply. "I have a special joke to play today, if you would permit it."

The king raised an eyebrow. "What kind of joke?"

The jester grinned. "A simple one, Your Majesty. But one that will have everyone laughing for days."

The king hesitated for a moment, then nodded. "Very well. But remember, jester, you are still bound by the rules of this court. No harm must come to anyone."

The jester bowed again. "Of course, Your Majesty. I would never dream of causing harm."

And with that, the jester set his plan into motion.

Throughout the day, he played his usual tricks and told his usual jokes, keeping everyone entertained and on their toes. But as the day wore on, he began to drop hints about his big joke. He whispered to courtiers as they passed him in the halls, and winked at kitchen staff as he walked through the kitchens.

By the time the evening banquet arrived, everyone was on edge, wondering what the jester had in store. The king himself seemed nervous, glancing around the room as he ate his dinner.

But when dessert arrived, the jester's plan was revealed. The pudding, which had been served to the entire court, was not pudding at all, but a mixture of harmless but very realistic-looking mud and worms.

There was a moment of stunned silence, and then the entire court erupted in laughter. Even the king, who was known for his stern demeanor, had tears of mirth in his eyes.

For days afterward, the court was abuzz with talk of the jester's joke. Some courtiers grumbled about the mess it had caused, but most agreed that it was one of the best pranks they had ever seen.

And as for the jester, he knew that he had done his job well. For just a moment, he had managed to lift the weight of the world from the court's shoulders and remind them that even in the midst of their daily struggles, there was always room for a little bit of joy and laughter.

The jester reveled in the aftermath of his prank. He strutted around the castle with a newfound sense of confidence, knowing that he had pulled off something truly special.

But as the days went on, he began to notice something strange happening. The courtiers were still laughing and joking, but they seemed to be doing it at his expense. He heard whispers and snickers as he passed, and saw pointed glances in his direction.

At first, he tried to shrug it off. After all, he was used to being the butt of the joke. But as the days turned into weeks, the jester began to feel a creeping sense of unease. Was it possible that his joke had backfired? Had he somehow crossed a line?

One night, unable to sleep, the jester crept out of his chambers and made his way to the castle's highest tower. He stood at the window, looking out over the moonlit landscape, and tried to make sense of his feelings.

It was then that he heard a soft cough behind him. Turning, he saw the king himself standing in the doorway.

"Your Majesty," he said, bowing low. "I didn't hear you approach."

The king smiled kindly. "I'm sorry to disturb you, jester. I just wanted to make sure you were all right."

The jester hesitated for a moment, then found himself pouring out his worries to the king. "Your Majesty, I don't know what's happened. Everyone is still laughing, but it's like they're laughing at me, not with me. Have I done something wrong?"

The king shook his head. "No, my friend. You have not done anything wrong. In fact, you have done something very right. You have reminded us all of the power of laughter, even in the darkest of times."

The jester felt a weight lift from his shoulders. "Thank you, Your Majesty. I was beginning to worry that I had lost my touch."

The king placed a hand on his shoulder. "Never fear, jester. Your touch is as sure as ever. And remember, the greatest joke of all is the one we play on ourselves."

The jester looked at the king quizzically. "What do you mean, Your Majesty?"

The king smiled enigmatically. "Ah, my friend. That is a joke for another day. For now, let us enjoy the laughter you have brought us, and remember that sometimes the best jokes are the ones we don't quite understand."
