Streaming Piracy Demonstrates Why Leaders Need To Refocus To A Regenerative Legacy

Short-Term Thinking Is Destroying Potential

I want to start this by saying that I don't condone Piracy in any manner.

I firmly believe that people, such as Actors and Crew in TV and Movies, Deserve to make good Income for the Hard Work that they Do.

I'm not going to say that I Believe that people who choose to Pirate are making the right choices because I don't.

What I do want to point out though is that when Business Leaders Fail to Recognize the Damage they Cause, there are Consequences that are Explainable that we happen to see very clearly in the Streaming Industry.

Since 2020, there has been a LOT happening around Streaming.

Increases in Content Cadence, faster than people can keep up with.

Lack of proper Marketing, leading to good shows being canceled and cut LONG before people discover them.

Well-Loved Franchises being Stripped of Value.

Password-Sharing Crackdowns.

Charging for Subscriptions while still Forcing Ads on Watchers, followed by Upcharges to Avoid those Ads.

Subscription Fatigue, where Customers have to choose between which Subscriptions they want to Pay for or not.

Then, there is the Piracy Issue.

Before 2020, Piracy had actually been in decline.

But after 2020 with these continued Changes in the Streaming Marketplace?

Piracy has increased by 36% in just 3 years, with Hundreds of BILLIONS of views per year.

Apparently, it is a profitable Business for these Pirating sites, as they earn $2 Billion Annually.

Now, this is where we need to Stop for a second and Think.

Why are so many Customers quickly turning to Piracy sites, when they know it is Illegal and Detrimental to the Careers of so many?

Well, it's because they can't keep up with the Price Gouging that is happening EVERYWHERE, including in Streaming.

Here's the Reality.

Customers are being Squeezed for more Money than they have.

Despite Costs going down for Companies, Prices have Remained High, or even Increased.

It was estimated that 53% of Inflation from Q2 to Q3 of 2023 was driven SOLELY by Corporate Profits.

Who pays for it at the end of the day?

Well, in the VERY short term, the Corporate Organizations "appear" to win.

But do they REALLY?

All Flourishing Is Mutual.

Though the Financial Statements may show Profit, it is damaging overall to EVERYONE, including the Corporations.

As Inflation remains High and Increases, Costs of Living go up.

This causes Customers to make Hard Choices and increases their Dis-Stress (which is ALREADY sky-high at 80% Burnout).

With Higher Dis-Stress, they become more Desperate.

It ends up Leading to decisions like choosing Pirating over Streaming Companies, as those Streaming Companies Demand a Higher and Higher cost.

When faced with Survival or Entertainment, people choose Survival.

However, if they can get Survival, and Pirate Entertainment, many people say, "Damn the greedy Corporations!"

So what does this do for the Streaming Companies?

It only causes bigger Issues.

Their Subscriber counts go down, meaning they are making less Profit.

Instead of looking at the Overall Problem and Thinking of how to Fix the REAL Problems Customers face, they Instead opt to put MORE Pressure on Customers.

Which leads to that Problem getting WORSE.

However, there are MORE Problems created.

As Profits Decrease, they put more Pressure on Employees to come up with Content Faster, Hoping to get Customers Addicted to their Offerings.

But this ends up Backfriring, as to Keep Up with Demand, Quality MUST go down.

As Quality goes down, it DETERS Customers.

On top of this, the increased Pressure on Staff causes them Higher Dis-Stress (Again, who likely were already Burnt Out).

Staff can only take so much Pressure before they become Actively Disengaged, Quiet Quit, and fully Retaliate.

Which we have seen happening in Streaming with ALL of the Strikes that have occurred.

This only RAISES Costs more for Streaming Companies.

Plus, the Dis-Stress that is caused by Leaders in these Companies causes Less Creativity and Innovation from Employees, which means WORSE Content Overall.

Since there are no Incentives for Employees or Customers to want to continue to do Business with the Streamers, it leads to more Attrition.

As Customers then become lost to Piracy, Jobs and Revenue are lost.

It is Estimated that Piracy leads to a $30 Billion loss in Revenue to the American Economy, and the loss of 250,000 jobs.

All of which could be Prevented by not doing Short-Term Thinking.

Do you want to know how to get out of this Cycle?

Design a Regenerative Legacy.

Look at the Real Problems you are Having in the Industry.

What are the Problems of your Customers?

They have to figure out how to SURVIVE in an Economy that is getting stacked FURTHER against them.

They WANT Entertainment, but can't Afford It.

On top of that, they don't want to Pay Exorbitant Prices for BAD Content!

Instead of making Customer's Lives WORSE, figure out how to IMPROVE their Lives!

Then, look at your Employees!

You need them to be Creative, Innovative, and make Quality Content!

They CAN'T Do that in Dis-Stress.

From the Psychophysiological Perspective, to get Creativity, Innovation, and Quality, Employers need Employees who can Consistently get into Flow States.

Not to mention the 5x Sustainable Boost in Productivity that comes from Flow States.

Flow States are IMPOSSIBLE at High Levels of Dis-Stress and Burnout.

Then, if you REALLY want to Drive People to WANT to Contribute and STAY with your Company, both Customers and Employees, Help FIX The World!

It doesn't even need to be a LARGE amount of Profit - even just 1% - 2% towards Fixing the World can do WONDERS toward a Company's Moral Support.

The Statistics around Showing Real Impact has shown growth in Sales of over 15%+!

It has to be an Honest Effort, that makes REAL Change, not just Greenwashing of course.

But when Customers and Employees see you DO something, it can breed Extreme levels of Buy-In.

People Choose to be Loyal when they Feel their Problems are being Aided, and their Support Leads to REAL Change in the World.

THAT is why you need to move to Designing a Regenerative Legacy.

It Fundamentally Flips the Game Upside Down and makes it Impossible to Compete Against.

    This is a wonderful breakdown on what is wrong and how it can be fixed!! I do want to comment that all of the capitalization in the story was a bit distracting. I hope the powers that be listen to what you have laid down here.

    That's exactly what happened with movie theaters and movie going: the theaters over-expanded in the 1990s so much that in the early 2000s many of them had to close down. Those remaining decided they could charge $10 per ticket, and then streaming came in. Instead of making the tickets more affordable, movie theaters started to charge even more for tickets. These are economies of scale, they should realize that they'd get a lot more revenue if they made tickets more affordable so that more people could go, instead of overcharging those who still like going to the movies.
