Can You Handle The Stress?

My Lesson Of The Day

So, technology is a fickle thing at times.

I am reminded of this today.

There is a Degree that I'm working on.

Part of that Degree involves me doing lessons, writing up responses, and submitting those lessons.

I recently submitted a lesson that I probably spent about 2 hours typing up.

Unfortunately for me, I also discovered that the site was undergoing maintenance and some individuals lost their uploads.

I checked mine, thinking I'd be safe.

But alas!

I was not so fortunate - that write-up is 100% gone!

Now, most people would be quite upset about something like this if it occurred to them, and I get it!

You spend a good amount of time on something, only for it to slip through your fingers.

I understand how this can be a huge Stressor - but how we Respond to a Stressor is more important than the Stressor itself.

When you study Psychophysiology and Energy (Mg-ATP) you find something very interesting.

Our Response to a Stressor is actually more Impactful to our body than the Stressor.

If you Think that a Stressor is bad, you'll be EXTREMELY more Negatively Impacted by it than if you think the Stressor is fine.

Just the act of "Thinking" a Stressor is bad ends up turning it into a significantly larger Stressor, which causes more Stress Damage (Oxidative Stress) and makes you Burn through Energy (Mg-ATP) faster.

The Perception of the Stress becomes the Reality of the Stress.

This means that if I "Thought" that this situation of losing my 2 hours of work was the end of the world, it could become more physically Stressful than, say, getting in a Car Accident.

We could all agree that, technically speaking, a Car Accident is a "Worse" Stressor, but your Perception of it could mean that lost work becomes "Worse" physically.

Isn't that crazy?!

If you Perceive the Stress to be Awful, it will BECOME Awful to us, quite literally!

Even if, in the grand scheme of things, it's really not that bad!

So, I lost my 2 hours of work, which I will need to re-do.

Oh well.

It's not like I was in a car accident, starving to death, or something worse.

My Perception of this is small because, let's face it, it is small!

It's not like I don't remember anything of what I wrote.

It's not like I can't go back to my notes to rewrite.

Maybe there is even an Opportunity for me to do even better!

Perhaps I can write something even more powerful than I did before!

How you Approach your Stressors is extremely important - especially in today's world!

If 80% of people are in Burnout, then most people are in HIGH levels of Dis-Stress.

What we feel about our Stressors is valid, but we also don't need to let our Stressors control every aspect of our lives.

We can take control of how much our Stressors Impact us by choosing how to React to them.

This can be difficult to do when we are already Dis-Stressed, but that just tells us how much MORE important it is to reduce our Stressors as much as possible!

If we reduce our Stressors, we can see the world more clearly.

If we can see more Clearly, we can choose how to React to a Stressor more positively.

If we React to a Stressor more positively, our Stressors control us less.

This allows us to be Free to carve a better Path forward.

Can you Handle the Stress?

The answer to that question is up to you.

Some Stressors are more difficult, I know, but our Reaction has more Impact than the Stressor itself.

How will you choose to React?

How will you choose to Perceive the Stressor?

What will you do from there?

I genuinely believe stress is a bigger killer than we realise... think of how many lovely people die young amd how many complete arseholes live seemingly forever. I genuinely believe bad people are less affected by stress because they just don't care 😩

Ha! I had a parallel experience today: spent 30 min crafting a message to a student forum, only not to have been able to upload it. It was entirely lost! Now I'm just pulling my will together to retype it because my students still deserve the summary and my interpretation of the assignment.
