Outré Club

A Magician, Mime, Clown, Witch, and Jester

By Shelby Hagood Published about a year ago 3 min read

Logline: A magician gives up his act because of people not liking the pull the bunny out of a hat trick anymore, but he figures out a new trick to use from the help of his friends that together come to form the Outré Club: A club for those outsiders who want to help one another out from their different perspectives while building a community.

Characters:

Magician: Man who uses magic in a performance sense

Mime: Silent performer with no props

Clown: Props and slapstick comedy

Witch: Magic for religious/spiritual purposes

Jester: Comedy at other people's expense

Idea source: When I was a kid, I took some creative writing classes and some interesting ideas came from the silly drawing books that I made. Here is one where I wrote about a monkey who tried to come up with helpful ideas, but they sometimes became misguided solutions to problems like cutting holes in an umbrella to get sun, but it not being very helpful when they need to be protected from the rain:

I wanted the comedy of these cute elements from a children's story to come together to create an actual TV show. A kids dream from there silly old book ideas to become something real. The story I am basing this show off of is one I called the Bright Idea Bunny that had a cat helping the bunny that was concerned about their magician owner try to find ideas for him to start new magic tricks from others that were similar but different from him. These pursuits helped them to come together in order to form the Outré Club:

Piolet Episode: Where the characters first come together because of the magician's bunny and cat asking the other characters what new magic trick the magician should perform. The new trick involves the bunny appearing after putting out a fire so that it is more flamboyant and interesting than the same bunny coming out of a hat trick.

Episode 1: The laughs continue in episode 1 when the clown starts to learn about why the new generation is so obsessed with clown core and clown husbandry. Is the clown now an outsider enough to still be considered outré if he is starting to become so trendy? The group decides that clowns with always be considered an outsider group no matter what.

Episode 2: A new person comes to the outré club seeking advise. They say they are a mime, but the use props so the club has a debate about if they are a mime or really a silent clown. The group takes a vote and decides on silent clown.

Episode 3: The witch's coven starts to become weary of her attending the outré club. They are afraid that their magic should not be helping the others for commercial purposes. They call on the spirits to ask for their permissions. The spirits reveal they are fine with it because others use "fun" instead of "serious" magic.

Episode 4: The jester figures out that her brand of jokes are now starting to be seen as insults. Making fun of others makes her look like a villain. She tries to change her comedy style, but eventually settles on being called an anti-hero.

Episode 5: The others start to wonder why the magician is the only one who uses pets and the others all bring one in too. The mime brings a mouse, the silent clown a hamster, the witch a black cat, the jester a dog, and the clown a bird. The group has a hard time incorporating their animals into what they do as they look to the magician for advise.
