World Drug Day: A Call to Sierra Leone's Youth to Say No to Substance Abuse

Rejecting Substance Abuse and Embracing a Healthier Future for Sierra Leone

By Mathew K MusaPublished 3 days ago 4 min read

Today, June 26, we join the global community in observing World Drug Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and the need for a drug-free world. This year's theme, "Health for Justice. Justice for Health," emphasizes the connection between health and justice in addressing the world drug problem. As a young professional from Sierra Leone, I feel compelled to speak directly to the youth of our nation about the urgent need to reject substance abuse and protect our futures.

The Global Challenge of Drug Abuse

Around the world, millions of people struggle with drug addiction. From the streets of New York to the alleys of Mumbai, the scourge of drugs spares no corner of the globe. Stories of lives ruined by substance abuse are all too common. In the United States, the opioid crisis has devastated communities, with countless families losing loved ones to overdoses. In Afghanistan, the cultivation of poppies for heroin production has fueled violence and instability.

Yet, amid these harrowing tales, there are also stories of hope and resilience. Former addicts who have turned their lives around, communities that have banded together to support recovery efforts, and governments that have implemented effective drug policies all show that change is possible.

The Situation in Sierra Leone

In Sierra Leone, the challenge of substance abuse is real and growing. Many young people are falling prey to drugs like marijuana, cocaine, and locally brewed alcohol. However, the most alarming trend is the rise of kush, a potent synthetic drug that has wreaked havoc across our communities. President Julius Maada Bio has declared a war on kush, calling it an epidemic and a national threat. He has launched a task force on drugs and substance abuse, promising a comprehensive government approach focused on prevention and treatment, involving law enforcement and community engagement.

For the youth of Sierra Leone, the consequences of drug abuse are severe. Substance abuse can lead to mental health issues, including depression and anxiety, and can increase the risk of infectious diseases. It also impairs judgment and decision-making, leading to risky behaviors and involvement in criminal activities. Ultimately, drug abuse can derail educational and career aspirations, trapping young people in a cycle of poverty and despair.

A Message to Sierra Leone's Youth

To my fellow young Sierra Leoneans, I implore you to consider the following:

Your Health Matters: Your body and mind are your greatest assets. Drugs like kush will harm your physical health, damage your mental well-being, and shorten your life span. Prioritize your health and choose activities that strengthen you, not destroy you.

You Are Not Alone: If you are feeling pressure to use drugs, know that you are not alone. Reach out to friends, family, or community leaders who can offer support. There are also organizations and hotlines available to help those struggling with substance abuse.

Focus on Your Dreams: Think about your goals and aspirations. Whether you want to become a doctor, a teacher, an entrepreneur, or anything else, drugs will only hold you back. Stay focused on your dreams and work hard to achieve them.

Find Healthy Outlets: Engage in sports, arts, and other hobbies that bring you joy and fulfillment. These activities not only keep you occupied but also provide a sense of accomplishment and purpose.

Be Informed: Educate yourself about the dangers of drug abuse. Knowledge is power, and understanding the risks can help you make informed decisions.

Stories of Hope and Recovery

Consider the story of J, a young man from Freetown who fell into the trap of drug abuse. At his lowest point, J was homeless and estranged from his family. But with the support of a local rehabilitation center, he turned his life around. Today, J is a counselor helping others overcome their addictions. His story is a testament to the possibility of recovery and the importance of support and determination.

In other part of the world, similar stories of transformation are emerging from community-based rehabilitation programs. Young people who once saw no future beyond drugs are now building new lives, equipped with skills and hope.

A Call to Action

On this World Drug Day, let us come together as a community to fight the menace of drug abuse. Parents, educators, community leaders, and peers all have a role to play in guiding our youth towards a healthy, drug-free life. We must create environments where young people feel valued, supported, and empowered to make positive choices.

To the youth of Sierra Leone, your future is bright, and your potential is limitless. Do not let drugs like kush dim that light. Embrace a life of health, hope, and happiness. Say no to drugs, and yes to a future full of possibilities. Together, we can build a stronger, healthier Sierra Leone.

Remember, your story is still being written. Make it a story of resilience, strength, and triumph over adversity. The power to change your life is in your hands. Let's make today the start of a drug-free journey for all of Sierra Leone's youth.
