Love is what brings two people together when they choose to marry. Before making this life-changing commitment, everything feels magical - filled with all the joy and tenderness that couples can share.

After marriage, that same love becomes the foundation that holds them together, strengthening their connection and shifting their relationship from a dream-like state to grounded reality.

However, the nature of lasting love has become something many question today. Some people have begun to doubt whether genuine love truly exists, especially given the high number of divorces we see in our communities.

Looking at the United States specifically, statistics from a 2000 report by Divorce Peers in Michigan showed that approximately 12,326,369 women and 9,032,100 men had experienced divorce.

These numbers suggest that many people enter marriage without truly understanding what it means to be genuinely in love.

This brings us back to recognizing authentic signs of love. Many relationships struggle because people believe they're experiencing love when they may not have reached that depth of feeling yet.

So, if you're trying to understand the difference between genuine love and temporary infatuation - which many people confuse - here are some heartfelt indicators of real love:

1. You find yourself embracing things you once disliked

When you're truly in love, you'll notice yourself accepting activities or interests that you previously avoided. Everything starts feeling more positive, and it seems like nothing could disturb what you share with this special person.

This shift doesn't happen overnight, though. At first, you might still feel resistant to certain things, even while in the relationship. But as love deepens, your perspective changes. Life appears more hopeful, and difficulties feel more manageable.

2. You genuinely treasure who they are

There's a difference between simply accepting someone and truly cherishing them. When you're really in love, you naturally feel how precious this person is to you - not because you feel obligated to sacrifice for them, but because they genuinely matter.

Love motivates you to seek opportunities to bring joy to your partner. When you truly love someone, making them happy becomes one of your main concerns, often taking precedence over your own immediate desires.

3. You wholeheartedly embrace them for exactly who they are

Feeling truly loved means knowing you're accepted simply for being yourself - not for any external reasons or conditions.

When you genuinely love someone, you can be completely authentic around them without feeling self-conscious or uncomfortable in their presence.

4. You deeply understand and empathize with them

To experience true love, you need to feel understood by your partner and to offer that same understanding in return. Real love respects your freedom to make your own choices about right and wrong.

You know you're in love when you can accept your partner as a whole person, not just their appealing qualities. You'll find yourself considering their thoughts and feelings, even when you don't share the same viewpoints. And when you're truly loved, you can trust that they'll extend the same consideration to you.

5. You feel deep care and protectiveness toward them

Authentic love provides confidence that your partner will remain faithful to you, regardless of circumstances. You know you're truly in love when you'd willingly put their safety above your own.

Real love means that even when your partner makes mistakes or shows their flaws, you wouldn't humiliate them publicly. Instead, you'd approach them privately for an honest conversation about what happened.

Love can certainly feel confusing, especially for those still learning what it truly encompasses. It's easy to mistake temporary attraction or physical chemistry for love.

The key to recognizing genuine love is caring for someone beyond just physical appeal, desire, and emotional dependency. These represent three different stages in developing feelings. When you've moved through and beyond these stages, you've likely found real love.
