Voicemails for Isabelle
A review of the best rom-com movie I have ever watched
I'm in the corner, watching you kiss her, I'm right over here, why can't you see me? -lyrics from Dancing On My Own by Robyn
Hey guys, been a while.
Okay full disclosure, I did not plan my return to Vocal this way.
I had another surgery and was off work for a couple weeks, began conspiring new names for myself on this platform as Chloe Rose Violet did not suit me anymore.
That's why I have listed myself as "Under Construction" because honestly, I was.
I was doing some deep reflection into who I was, what I wanted this platform to be about, and exploring who I am outside my regular day-to-day life.
But life has been hitting the past little while, and I decided to change up my platform a little bit.
Introducing:
Chloe Unfiltered
I decided that I have no filter, in real life and online.
I call it babbling, other people call it a personality flaw.
But I have embraced my honesty and I am truly proud of how much growth I have accomplished in the past year and I cannot wait to keep sharing with you guys as I continue figuring life out.
SO with all that being said,
Voicemails to Isabelle: A Review
This movie made me cry within five minutes of watching it. I mean that. I paused it, to put it on with my fiancé. And he would hate me telling you guys this, but he compared it to "Marley & Me" so you know damn well he was crying too.
Here is a brief summary of the movie:
Jill leaves voice messages to her deceased sister telling her about her chaotic life in San Francisco. Unwittingly, a mysterious Austin real estate agent begins to receive their confessions.
Summary taken from IMDb
Right? The summary alone makes you realize what you're about to walk into. Now, I don't watch many movies. The last movie I watched was Apex and that was over a month and a half ago when I watched that one. (Also a really good movie if you like thriller type shows.)
But when I say this one grabbed my attention on social media, I mean it.
It was the movie of my childhood dreams.
I haven't watched a romantic comedy in a very long time. But when I say this movie has me in a chokehold, I mean that.
I sobbed.
I laughed.
I clapped.
I predicted moments.
I got mad at the characters.
It was perfect.
The only problem I have, is that this movie ISN'T based on a book.
I was choked especially as the storyline felt so freaking real to me, it had to have been based on a novel.
But from all the digging I have done, it was not.
That truly surprised me.
In a world where every other movie seems to be a remake, sequel, or adaptation, Voicemails to Isabelle managed to feel completely original. It wasn't trying to be flashy, or over the top. It simply told a story about grief, healing, love, and and the strange ways that people manage to find each other in the midst of all that.
Without managing to spoil too much of the plot for you guys.... There were moments where I wanted to yell at my TV. (I may have once or twice.) The characters felt authentic, and real. They spoke on romantic love, feminsim, and platonic love all wrapped in one pretty package.
If fictional characters can make you genuinely angry, make you laugh out loud, and then have you crying ten minutes later, someone did their job correctly. That's a sign of good writing.
I still grieve my Grandma. We used to talk on the phone every day and we are coming up on two years since she passed away. Maybe that's why I connected with this movie so much.
My Grandma was an amazing woman. She truly was my best-friend and not a day goes by where I don't miss her, and her conversations with me. She would have absolutely watched this movie with me and I knew it as soon as I sat down to watch it last night.
The way they explored Jill's grief in the movie, was so raw, and real. The romance between Wes and Jill didn't feel forced, it all flowed so well and I have to applaud everyone involved in this movie.
If I could rate this movie, it would be an utter 10/10.
I just really connected with Jill, as I still am grieving, learning to accept love from people in all kinds of different ways: platonically, romantically, and family love.
All I am saying, is give this movie a chance.
Bring some tissues.
Watch it with a good friend.
And be prepared to be amazed.
In regards to my name change...
I cannot wait to share more "unfiltered" content that soothes my own soul. Content that feels authentically me, where I just rely on my own voice to dictate what I write: unafraid of judgement.
Because at the end of the day, that's why I write.
Not because I always have the right words.
Sometimes a movie, a novel, a song, or even a voicemail can remind us that we are not as alone as we think we are.
I write for myself, but I also write to remind people that you're not alone in what you're going through.
This is my life: and I am so proud to have you all along this journey of mine.
Thank you for reading.
