During an interview, there are certain things that all hiring managers want to see. To help you prepare for the big day, here's what you need to know about impressing during a job interview:

Research the company

Make sure you know everything about your potential new workplace before you step foot inside. That means finding out the ins and outs of the business, the industry it's in, where it's located and what its goals are.

Be on time for your interview

You should allow enough time to arrive early at the interview location before your scheduled meeting. That will give you the opportunity to calm down and focus on the task at hand without rushing or panicking. Also, arriving late for an interview can give off the impression that you're flaky.

Dress appropriately for the job

Most hiring managers will assume that if you don't dress like everyone else in the office, then you either (a) don't respect them or (b) don't respect yourself. So make sure your clothes are clean and pressed and fit your body type well.

Answer questions with examples from your personal life

Employers want to see how you can apply your skills in real-life situations, so whenever possible, give an example of something that happened at another job or school and how you handled it. If you don't have any professional experience, focus on the extracurricular activities or volunteer work you've done.

Speak clearly and succinctly

Make sure your answers are concise, well-organized and to the point. Long-winded responses tend to lose the interviewer's interest, while short answers with relevant details demonstrate that you're interested in the job and deliver what you promise.

Be honest about your strengths and weaknesses

All work has its ups and downs, so hiring managers want to hire someone who's willing to get through the inevitable rough patches that come with any job. By showing that you're aware of your flaws and willing to try to improve upon them, you'll present yourself as a more even-keeled candidate.

Be open about your career goals

Hiring managers like to see ambition in their applicants, so make sure you share your career goals and show that you're interested in making a career at the company.

Be enthusiastic about your new job

If you're not passionate about getting out of bed and going to work every morning, then it will be obvious during the interview process . And since employers are looking for someone who will go through fire to get the job done, they'll want to hire someone who is excited about taking on new challenges.

Answer questions with complete answers

If an interviewer asks you, "Do you have any concerns about joining our team?" don't reply with a simple "no" or shrug your shoulders, since this doesn't show any research on your part. Instead, give an example of why you fit in so well with the company's team and what you'll bring to the table as an employee.

Make plenty of eye contact

You never want to stare at someone too long, but most people tend to hold eye contact for just a few seconds, if that. To make a lasting impression, you should aim to hold eye contact with your interviewer for at least 10-15 seconds at a time.

Follow up

If the interviewer has taken the time out of his or her day to meet with you and discuss potential opportunities, then it's best to send a thank-you note within 24 hours of the interview. The note should reiterate your interest in the job and reinforce why you're a good fit for the position.

Good luck!
