Trust in a relationship is extremely important. Trust ensures that you can confide in your partner with anything without feeling judged. Trust allows you to feel comfortable around them, knowing they are not going to push boundaries or pressure you into doing something you are uncomfortable with. Without trust, communication breaks down and the relationship is weakened overall.

Here are 7 Ways to Build Trust in a Relationship:

Trust can be broken down into two main areas: trust that your partner will not cheat on you and trust that they are being completely honest with you. Trust is built through communication, actions, gestures, and comfortability between the two people involved. Building trust after infidelity has occurred or if there is an issue of dishonesty requires patience and reminding your partner what made you fall in love with them to begin with.

Understanding why trust is important will help you determine if this is the direction you would like to take your relationship. By understanding the importance of trust, it can be easier to apply these seven ways to build trust in a relationship into your life.

1. Recognizing Trust is Important

If you learn to recognize the importance of trust, knowing that it strengthens your relationship, it will be easier for you to act upon. A lack of trust can cause misunderstandings and lead both parties involved to think about breaking up. Spend time talking with your partner about what they like most about the relationship. Remind them why you want to be with them and what attracted you to them when you first started dating. This will help remind your partner of the feelings they have in the relationship, hopefully strengthening it.

2. Communicating Your Needs

This is extremely important in a relationship, no matter how much trust there may or may not already be. By communicating your needs, you are letting the other person know that they are important to you and that you respect them enough to let them know what makes you uncomfortable or unhappy.

By communicating your needs it is much easier for both of you to ensure there are no surprises. If one partner does not want children but the other does, this has the potential to destroy a relationship if it is never discussed.

If you already have children and your partner does not, this can be an issue of trust in some ways. If you had children before meeting your partner, but did not mention it until after they were already getting attached to them, this could be considered dishonest behavior.

It is also important to remember that your partner may be in the same situation and not want children. Understanding that you both might not share the same feelings about having children will go a long way towards ensuring trust in the relationship.

3. Showing Your Partner Respect Even if They Disagree With You

Everyone has different values and opinions, but this should never lead to a lack of respect. If you cannot show your partner respect, then it will be much more difficult for them to trust in the relationship.

4. Avoiding Gossip

Gossip can destroy a relationship. If you talk negatively about your partner with other people, this could lead to trust issues when your partner finds out what you have been saying.

If your friends or family members are talking about your relationship, this could also be a sign that there is an issue of trust between the two people involved. If one person has something negative to say about their significant other, it could lead to the same thing.

5. Trusting Your Gut Instincts

If you are normally suspicious of people, it could be a sign that you are not trusting in your partner. Everyone deserves the benefit of the doubt when starting a relationship, but if this continues, then it may be time to re-evaluate your current situation.

People who possess these negative traits will find ways to bring others down, and eventually will do it to you if they are not stopped.

6. Having a Balance of Power in the Relationship

Relationships that seem unbalanced can lead to feelings of resentment and jealousy. If one person feels like their independence and individuality is being compromised too much, they may begin looking outside of the relationship for attention.

By having a balance of power in the relationship, both people feel like they have equal say and equal influence. This can also give each person a sense of self-respect and belonging.

7. Focusing on the Good Times You Will Have Together

If you focus too much on your partner's flaws or other negative qualities, then it will be more difficult to have a fulfilling relationship. No one is perfect, and everyone has something that bothers them about another person in the beginning of a relationship.

When you focus on these things is when problems can arise later down the road. Focus on the good aspects of your partner until you are sure they are truly right for you. Even then, keep working on your relationship so that you can continue to grow together.

Everyone makes mistakes, and if you are with someone who is willing to work on their flaws, then you should be willing to do the same.
