The Art of Gratitude

The numerous ways of how I'm grateful

By Mark Wesley Pritchard Published 4 months ago 4 min read

Whenever a new year arrives, I've always expected that it would be terrible for me. However, 2026 so far has gone off to a remarkable start for yours truly. We're not even halfway through the year yet, but I feel like I'm doing something right. Usually, I would be on pins and needles worrying what kind of year I would have. I was a pessimistic individual who was such a Negative Nancy for no reason. I was a worrier. This year is different, because I'm getting better of staying positive and being thankful for the small, simple things in life. I'll share a few of those items in this story. When you don't complain less about what you don't have, life will become much better.

Seven Years of Hard Work Finally Pays Off

After years of hard work, I received some news that I had been waiting to hear for so long. Not only I received a raise but was finally made a full-time employee. I wanted to quit several times, because I was concerned that my career wasn't going anywhere. However, I decided to stick it out and continued to work hard. This news came a few days after the new year arrived. I made a promise to both myself and my grandfather, who passed away in 2022, that I would work hard in everything I did and never give up. I'm still working at my current job, because I have the potential to show off my skills and knowledge to everyone. Plus, people respect and appreciate me. I did a lot of crying and praying for the last seven years and finally got what I had been asking and fighting for. Recently, I was on Pinterest and found a Bible verse that suited the situation that I was going through since 2018. It was James 1:12: "Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him." It's been nearly four years since my grandfather's passing, but I've learned how to have faith in myself. Growing up, I wouldn't say that I was an atheist, nor doubted that God was real. During the seven years of the aforementioned challenges, I was going through, I needed someone to help me through the difficult times and have a little bit of peace in my life. I knew that voice in my head to keep pushing was the Lord. His love for me was never questioned, nor doubted. Having faith in yourself and a higher power works. You have to believe that everything will work out in your favor. Sure, you might fail at times, but He will never leave your side.

My First Real Vacation in Nearly 15 Years

For the first time in nearly 15 years, I finally got a chance to go on a long overdue, well-deserved vacation back in February. I love my job, but this guy needed some him time. The destination: Arlington, Texas. To those who are new to Vocal, this was the place I grew up in and also it's my hometown. I currently reside in another state, which I've been living in for nearly 20 years, but I'll forever be a Texas boy and also forever a Texan. During the two days I was down there, I was surprised and amazed about how much things have changed the last time I was there. The weather for both days were unusually warm and windy for mid-February, but I wasn't complaining. I'll have the full story about returning home to Arlington in the link down below. I was born in New York, but Texas will always be my home.

Life in General

Last but not least, I'm grateful to be alive. Tomorrow is never promised to us, so we have to live life to the fullest. Having fun and enjoying ourselves is what we are meant to do. I don't give myself enough or any credit, because I don't want to come off as being boastful. Since we're here, I'm going to brag about myself a little bit. The last several years have been difficult for me, but I've overcame multiple obstacles in my life. Life isn't supposed to be perfect all the time, because perfection doesn't exist. Perfection is just a facade and that's all it is: a facade. I've learned how to appreciate the smallest things in life. I may not be a wealthy man or the most handsome individual in the world, but being grateful for being able to do amazing things is the mindset I believe in. Plus, I never take my life for granted. Through faith and grace, I'm going to make the most of it. Looking around and appreciating the good in life is proof that despite going through personal challenges over the years, I can overcome all things.

You may not have or look like a million bucks, but by appreciating and being grateful for the smallest things in life, you'll have a better understanding of how to live in the moment.
