He Was Everything
Ben wanted so badly to kiss his best friend. His best friend since elementary school. The guy who stopped him from going off the rails with other kids, and helped him consistently with his hot headed self righteousness... who got him to see things in a grounded, level and down to earth kind of way.

They’re tracing their fingers down my back. I feel their soft hands, pressing with love, and hear the whispered counting of my vertebrae. Warm lips press against the nape of my neck. A sigh, and a shuffle, the sounds shift to the scratches of a pencil, tracing thought. The book is wriggled back under their side of the mattress, and the click of the light brings quiet darkness. Their breathing is even, they tap their fingers on their belly.
PART IV Please Don't Call Me Sir
PART IV: Magazines in the 70's and early 80's were very powerful media, much like YouTube, Pintrest, and the similar, are today. Our mothers used magazines for dinner recipes, beauty and romance secrets; the kids used them to join teen fan clubs, find posters for their rooms and to seek out what was popular in fashion. My room was full of magazine pages, both male and female teen idols. It was within these pages that kids would develop crushes. They would get some of their first ideas about what they wanted to look like, what they wanted to wear and who and what they wanted to be someday.
Book Worms
Used bookstores were a rare sight these days. Hell, they were almost extinct. The fact that Randall even found this one was a matter of dumb luck. His ability to get lost while trying to follow his phone's GPS might be considered skillful by some. But today, he had turned down an alley instead of a street, a hazard of an over-eager GPS voice telling him to turn now, when really it meant turn in a second. Randall, ever the obedient instruction follower, turned when told. Thus, landing him in the alley.
Unexpected
I can tell you all about how my husband came to receive $20,000. My dream last night wasn’t any stranger than usual. I was walking alone in a park looking at trees and feeding pieces of bread to the ducks along the bank of the pond. As I continued my stroll I came across a playground where children were playing, laughing, running, and just having fun the way kids do. I had always entertained the thought of someday having children but realized that a gay man is not always successful in achieving parenthood. In my dream as the children were playing, one of them came over to me. She was about six years old with long braided brown hair and an adorable smile. She did not stop until her embrace had her arms wrapped around my legs. She looked up at me and said “Hi Daddy”. My heart melted inside me because I knew I had recognized her all along from previous dreams I’ve had. I bent down and I hugged her like I had been away on a long trip and she missed me desperately. As I felt this child in my arms I saw the surroundings disappear and my arms were once again empty.
Being Gay in a Small Rural Town
Hey everyone. Welcome to country life, where 99% of the population is conservative and Republican. At the same time, you're the only gay in the village. Mad props if you got the Little Britain reference. The population is usually under a thousand, maybe a little more, and there are no traffic lights, and only half the streets are paved. Don't forget you have to walk a mile in the snow to get to your damn mailbox. Some things maybe a little exaggerated, but for some folks, being queer in a rural town is actually a lot different than it is for anyone else.

“Jack, we can’t do this anymore. Michael saw us the other night in the bar.” “What’s the big deal? So he saw us in a gay bar. If he was there, he’s obviously gay, too.”

She Wore a Hat She wore a baseball cap and a big mischievous smile that was contagious. She looked gay. The kind of gay that’s not confusing, unlike myself. She had masculine features, short hair, men's jeans, t-shirt and I couldn’t take my eyes off her. I wore a dress and crossed and uncrossed my legs as she talked. I was nervous and excited and crushing on this new found acquaintance.

For Renee
For two hours I studied the last picture we took together; meticulously examining every freckle, every follicle, anything that could make it make sense. The day we took the picture, I received my 12th rejection notice and didn’t feel like going to the beach. She, in only the way she could, convinced me that some sun and fresh air would cheer me up. It was one of the best days of my life.
The Never Ending War
When she was young, she was a Reluctant Warrior. She did not seek to fight, the world brought the fight to her doorstep, and so she went to battle, with a rusted sword found at the bottom of a dumpster behind an all-night diner. She fought. Some would say braver as time went on, but really it was just wilder and angrier – never braver. Now she sits in her old cardigan, olive green with large, brown buttons, her comfy slippers, worn and coming loose at the soles, and stares at the hope chest at the end of her bed.
Her touch
As gentle as a butterfly, as soft as a rose peddle, the first time she touched me made my heart race like a speeding bullet and pound like a bass drum! Fireworks exploded in my head! Was this real or was it just a dream? It started out as an ordinary day, going to work, then to the gym. There she was walking across the gym. The most beautiful woman I have ever seen! Our eyes meet, I smiled shyly and she waved. I was shocked she actually noticed me! I went about my business continuing my workout, not thinking much about the encounter. She was gorgeous, but I’m sure she was way out of my league! An hour and a half went by and I finished my routine and started to leave. As I walked to the door I hear the most majestic voice say “hey, wait!” I spun around. To my surprise it was the same woman that caught my attention earlier. “I’m Jess”, she introduced herself extending her hand. “I’m Alex, nice to meet you”, I said, my voice trembling a bit in nervousness. She chuckled at my shy nature. “Don’t be shy, just be yourself”, she told me. I chuckled and turned a bit pink in the face and glanced down. It was hard for me to look such a beautiful woman in the face. She laughed, “let’s go get a drink, I’m buying”, she suggested. “Sure”, I replied, still super nervous and shy. We walked a few blocks down to a bar near by. I suggested we sit in a corner booth, that way maybe I could sit a little close to Jess and we could watch people. Jess liked that idea and told me she enjoys watching people as well. We both shared a laugh. We sat and watched people and talked about life, about the simple things, just enjoying each other’s company and getting to know each other. One of Jess’s favorite songs came on and she grabbed my hand and said come dance with me. I was nervous. I laughed and told Jess that I can’t dance. She says, “follow my lead, you’ll be ok!” I laughed. It was so much fun. I gazed into her gorgeous brown eyes. She wrapped her arms around me. I was on cloud nine! I was definitely not expecting today to go the way it has. It was such an awesome turn of events for my life! The song finished and we went to sit back down. Jess scooted right next to me, laying her head on my shoulder. “You’re amazing”, she sighed. I laughed and said, “I didn’t do anything!” She leaned up and kissed my cheek. I immediately blushed. We had a couple more drinks before we decided we should go. Neither of us wanted the night to end. We walked with our arms around each other. Both of us lived fairly close to the bar. I walked Jess home. I was humbled to have such a gorgeous woman by my side! I was in awe! Totally astonished! Today was by far the greatest day of my life! We reached Jess’s door. “Well, this is my stop”, she laughed. “I don’t want tonight to end”, I told her with a sigh. She turned and wrapped her arms around me. “I don’t either”, Jess replied. “Come inside”, she continued. “Are you sure?” I asked, getting nervous again. Jess insisted. I gave in, as I was head over heels for this woman already. She kissed my cheek in excitement. We were both so excited to be in each other’s company. Jess put on a movie. To my surprise, it was a horror movie. We sure did have a lot in common! Jess cooked up some popcorn for us to share. We sat on the couch, Jess pulled me close. Every time the movie got intense, Jess would hold my hand tight. “I’m glad you’re here”, she told me. “As am I”, I replied. We finished the movie. Jess turned and kissed me. Her soft, rose peddle like lips pressed against mine. Fireworks exploded in my head again, my heart racing. It was pure magic! We stood there wrapped in one another’s arms. “The night is still young”, Jess whispers in my ear. I got excited all over again! She grabbed my hand and lead me to the bedroom down the hall. I was trembling with excitement. She jumped on the bed and pulled me next to her. We laid there in each other’s arms sharing the sweetest, most passionate kisses. I slid my hands under her shirt and gently rubbed her soft, warm body. She pressed up against me more. She bit my lip. We laid there embracing one another. We shared intimate moments and loved on each other until we fell asleep, her head on my chest. We were just two girls happily in love.
